Here's a completely biased POV. I would never shoot jpeg again after dicovering RAW. Jpegs can be fine, as you have discovered, but if anything goes wrong with your exposure or the lighting screws up for a multiplicity of reasons, RAW will wipe the floor with what you can fix using a jpeg. Certainly, there is a learning curve in fully using the benefits of RAW, but more than worth the little trouble.
If you are shooting press and need to file pics very fast with an agency, or anything of that nature, then jpeg is probably the best bet. Otherwise, shoot RAW, choice one of the many excellent RAW processors and blaze away. You will be amazed at what you can pull out of a hat full of RAW images. Even a rabbit! ![]()

Can't say it any better than Erl did. RAW is the way to go to get the best out of your D2 images.
