Archiver Posted May 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Through the years of the X1 and X2, some of us speculated from leaked photos that these cameras could potentially have a pop-up EVF. That oval-shaped outline on the top plate could have been such a thing. But as it turned out, it was always a flash. Looks like Sony have been watching the LUF, because the newly announced RX100 Mk III has a pop-up EVF, and seems to be the first camera to have one. Imagine, no clunky stick-on EVF and only a hair bigger than the RX100 Mk II. Imagine the chorus of praise if Leica had been the first to do it. Joe S Posted May 16, 2014 Share #3 Posted May 16, 2014 I really like my RX100, a point and shoot that you can really make nice sizeable prints from, but the new version with the finder is really tempting. Damn all these great new products!
macjonny1 Posted May 16, 2014 Share #4 Posted May 16, 2014 Seems to me a much better value than the T with a zoom
lct Posted May 16, 2014 Share #5 Posted May 16, 2014 What's the point in comparing an APS to a small sensor camera?
Lee Martin Posted May 16, 2014 Share #6 Posted May 16, 2014 What's the point in comparing an APS to a small sensor camera? What's the point in putting an old sensor in your new hand polished body.
macjonny1 Posted May 16, 2014 Share #7 Posted May 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) What's the point in comparing an APS to a small sensor camera? Smaller sensor size, but faster lens. Zoom and EVF that don't cost $1800 plus. $600 USD more. Seriously that T zoom for $1800?!?
CalArts 99 Posted May 17, 2014 Share #8 Posted May 17, 2014 fwiw, I printed some large prints on the Epson 9600 with a colleague's RX100. Depending on subject matter and substrate, etc., (we used some Canson Platine) one can print pretty large from these smaller sensors. We did a few 16x20 image area size prints and it was similar to 6x4.5 film format (e.g., using a film like Portra 160.) While it's not for every application, they can definitely make pretty decent prints. And for the majority of the web and monitor viewing public out there, it's more than really needed. But aside from that, I think the real story here is that Sony is experimenting with this kind of EVF (we all knew that somebody would eventually.) And doing it with the truly pocket sized RX100 seemed a logical choice. All their other cameras (aside from the RX1) already have built-in EVFs. If this one ends up working well with the RX100, then we may very well see it in something like the next RX1 (or another new FF or APS-C body.) AB007 Posted May 17, 2014 Share #9 Posted May 17, 2014 RX100 is my fav pocketable camera. The mark III is very tempting since I love the built in viewfinder.
Mr. Thompson Posted May 17, 2014 Share #10 Posted May 17, 2014 The RX100s are also my favorite pocket cameras. We have both the first version and the Mk II with external viewfinder. The Mk III is very tempting but the voice in my head keeps saying "save the money for glass..."

I have not and will never have the T in its current configuration but comparing an APS to a small sensor camera is like comparing apples to oranges IMHO. My little Fuji X-E2 would be a more serious candidate for that...

My little Fuji X-E2 would be a more serious candidate for that... The RX100 is not really a small sensor camera but 1" sensor in the somewhat strange sensor nomenclature. The results of this sensor's size/quality equation speak for themselves. Calling the Fuji X-E2 "little" is more like comparing cantaloupes to oranges! lct Posted May 17, 2014 Share #14 Posted May 17, 2014 1.53 vs 2.73 crop factor. More difference than between a full frame and a medium format camera. We don't play in the same league here .

Archiver Posted May 18, 2014 Author Share #17 Posted May 18, 2014 That's a good point about the possibility of the RX1 successor having a pop-up EVF. I hadn't thought of that. Although I think the RX1 body could be a little larger and include a NEX style EVF without becoming overly big.

I love my RX100II, and have improved things a bit in terms of handling by fitting the stick-on Sony grip and a a Gariz half case. Small camera, big performance. I bought the RX100II for my wife and also got the sony grip and added a Gordy's wrist strap too. With those the handling is much improved. But I have to say the X2 with the Leica grip was even better.. //Juha Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
