Does the focus confirm work when using live view instead of the viewfinder?
It might sound stupid, but I do not completely get it...

Marcel the short answer seems to be yes, you can. The problem with the current 1D (when in mirror-up mode) is that the mirror always flips down after making the exposure, thus hitting the lens. If I understand the published material correctly, one can now use live-view (flips the mirror up) then mount the lens and use live-view to frame (like a P&S!) and use the enlargment feature (5x or 10x) to focus. One must of course remove the lens before leaving live-view.
As for focus confirmation, I don't know. My guess would be that it will only work with Canon lenses like on the present cameras. The enlargement feature of the back screen should work much more precisely, I've never been impressed with focus confirmation, particularly on wide-angles it's useless.

3. Micro adjustment for each lens of the AF. I have some great Canon lenses as well, but aside from the L 35 1,4, none of them focus 100% correctly in AF mode.

4. 14 bit depth signal processing. My experience with the DMR indicates a substantially better colour fidelity with increased bit depth, this should improve colour rendition visibly. Reports from users of the 1DIII indicates that this is indeed the case.

2. I believe the D3 can do mirror up, but can't, of course, use any of the exotics, but can use the truly excellent ZF lenses (I have two, the 35/2 and the 50/2). Diglloyd rates the 100/2 macro planar as the best DSLR lens he has ever used, and the two I have are just great (and auto stop-down, a real blessing fot my work). I wonder if 10X is enough to really see? I have 16X on the D2Hs, and that is enough (I am talking here about playback, not live view). I don't know what the live view mag. is on the Nikon.

3. The D3 has micro adjustment too, as I understand it. And I agree: this is necessary. My S5 Pro needed a major mirror box adjustment to be able to MF accurately. I don't know if the Nikon allows any of these to be saved (that would be a good idea), and I don't know if it is AF or MF that is adjustable.

4. The D3 has 14 bit processing too, I believe.

5. It *IS* exciting to get a new camera! I will probably have the first one here. With the D2Hs and the S5 Pro, I have all bases covered (except being able to use that great Leica-R glass, of course). Cheers, Kit

Kit, the D3 seems a very well endowed camera, and those new Zeiss lenses with F-mount are certainly tempting. Besides the camera UI is probably much better than Canon's. Looking forward to your user report. Interesting times, isn't it

Interesting to see how a Nikon - Canon comparison is developing on the Leica forum.

I currently own two highly regarded Zeiss lenses, that I use on the Canon 5d.
The 21mm Distagon and the 50mm Planar 1.4 ZS.
They both are very good indeed. But none of them have the 'magic' Leica rendering.
This makes my choice very easy: Canon 1ds Mk III and Leica R10.... ;-)
