Okay, three cameras, two lenses. A clue - two have Sony sensors, two have the same Leica lens. All at ISO 160.

Take your pick.

If you can name the cameras (not hard), the lenses, a bit more difficult, and then match them to the images, you get a chocolate fish (it's a Kiwi thing).

By the way - it's Moët.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Cheers

John

Top m9 50/1.4asph

Middle Sony a7r 50/1.4asph

Bottom Sony nex 28/2 asph

This is one of those tests where all the experts stay quiet then wax lyrical when the results are known :D

Oh, very true, Pete!

Two of three cameras correct, none of the lenses.

Which image do you prefer?

Too many variables for me. All i can say (before watching the exif data) is that the first pic is too soft, because of a slight motion blur perhaps i don't know. Unless it has been shot with a coke bottle of course but i know it is not true. The second pic has been shot with the same lens (same bokeh) w/o having the same blur problem and the third one does not tell me anything. Err *did* not tell me anything sorry. ;). My diagnosis? Slight tremor with old gear disappearing with new gadgets. :D Merry Christmas to you to. :)

And proves way more than people around here are comfortable with.

Merry Christmas John,

I'll play along. The first two are shot with the Noctilux and the last with your 21. The first is the A7R and the second is your M9. The last is shot with the 21 and your crop frame ?

I like them all, they are pictures of booze.:p

#1=a7r+50/1.4

#2=M+50/1.4

#3=Nikon 800 with perhaps a 50. I prefer this image.

Agree with Rick since they all contain Christmas Cheer!

I must say I respect your patience as I could not stand there and take 3 shots without finishing the glass somewhere along the line.

Sony A7R w/ "a 50"

M240 w/ "same 50"

X100S

Dweebs, he doesn't have a M240. How about we change your second choice to M9? He already said, I believe, that the 50/1.4 was not one of the lenses. The OOF lights seem to have 9 blades? That would be his 50 Noctilux.

Hey, are your hands starting to sting yet from the vibration of that A7R shutter?:p

Merry Christmas,

Rick... wait for it.........Leica!

But if it was an M9 Rick, Mitch would have been in here already linking to his "shooting random people in the dark" thread. So it can't be that.

I was always tempted to do the same as John here, but with 5DII+35L, X100S, M9+35Cron and M240+35Cron without telling anyone even which camera or lenses were used. But, I predicted people would simply shirk away from it, for fear of proving themselves wrong that they can tell which frickin combination shot which shot - especially as my custom profiles render the final image so damn close. But then I got a life, thankfully.

Hands stinging from fictitious shutter vibration? Not in the slightest. Have shot gawd knows - hundreds - thousands of shots with the A7R and 35FE + 55FE. No going back for me, Leica gear going up for sale in the new year, back to reality.

Merry Christmas buddy, hope you have a cracking time.

I don't know about the lens model but on all other counts I judged this the same. Its the yellow it always seems to be amped up on the M8/M9 but is rendered more golden on Sony sensors. Its the first thing that stands out in the colour difference between the M9 and A7 in the test shots posted online recently. I notice this purely because lurid yellows is something that aggravates sometimes when I am in the digital darkroom with the DNGs from my M8. On the X100 it was reds (Sony sensor), they always came out to bright in tone, blown out red seems to be a common theme with digital.

Are you going to sell your exotics or just the digital bodies?

I suspect you won't be the only one jumping ship. Emperor's clothes and all that. There's only so much poor QC and poor software people will take before people say enough is enough. I'm lucky that I simply have little interest in digital, and I like using film Ms whilst on holiday. I might keep my one remaining M9 for occasional use, but I plan to use my medium format gear more next year. All off topic though.

Okay, so the reason I posted this is that we hear so much crap here about image quality and sensor performance that I just wanted to know which image people liked the most. It is about the image quality in the end, isn't it.

I take pictures because I enjoy the process of taking pictures, and the end product gives me pleasure. M is only for messucher, buttons, shutter noise, video, MP, corner performance ... it all leaves me somewhat cold. I do get pleasure in the form factor and the purity of Leica, but the image is what counts.

I like the third image. It's colour balance is the most accurate, and it sparkles (excuse the pun).

The first two have somewhat distracting Torx key, faceted bokeh, which I don't like so much.

So, which is which? In order:

M9-P with 75 Summilux

A7R with 75 Summilux

D800E with AF-S micro 60mm 2.8G

As the man says - get out and take more photos. Me, I might spend a little more time with my D800, when I don't mind lugging the monster about. The results are worth it (from time to time).

Merry Christmas
