jhluxton Posted March 4, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 4, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) My trusty V-Lux 1 is 5 years old this month and has been reliable workhorse (used for ship photography). I didn't bother considering an upgrade to a V-Lux2 after the almost immediate complaints of poor image quality due to sensor issues. Now the V-Lux 3 has appeared I am wondering if the upgrade is now worthwhile. Has anyone made this move and compared the still image results. The movie making ability of the V-Lux 3 is not important as I have probably only made about four short clips using the V-Lux 1. Also if anyone has a V-Lux 3 and a Digilux 3 I was wondering how the image quality compares between these two models. At present I have four Leica digital cameras V-Lux 1, Digiliux 3 and C-Lux 2 (all around or coming up 5 years old) plus an X1. Currently I could do with rationalising the collection and would look to do so if the V-Lux 3 compares favourably to the V-Lux 1 and Digilux 3 to sell all three of the older cameras whilst they still retain some value. Obviously I am keeping the X1! Thanks John
Advertisement Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Hi jhluxton, Take a look here Who has upgraded from V-Lux 1 to V-Lux 3 or DL3 to V-Lux 3. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LotharZhou Posted March 8, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 8, 2012 wow, I have almost the same gear as you do, the C-lux2 I bought in Salzburg in 2007 with a crazy price, 600 euro by then and then the V-lux1, I must say apart from the old sensor and small back screen, it is such a wonderful camera, since now I am using all M system, no plans to upgrade it. The C-lux2 I must say not up to either the standard or the reputation of Leica, they should have chosen a better pany camera as a base.
mrware Posted March 9, 2012 Share #3 Posted March 9, 2012 I don't own one, I doubt many here do, based on the lack of responses to your post. I think I'd look at forums discussing the Panasonic equivalent camera the Lumix FZ150. I've seen some nice pics taken with it and good reports on IQ in a superzoom. stuny Posted March 9, 2012 Share #4 Posted March 9, 2012 I borrowed a V Lux 2 for Antarctica and NW Argentina (see results on our site), and other than having very low light inferiority to my D2, and the near impossibility to manual focus, I thought the camera did quite well, though one Forum member said that my image quality was bad - I didn't see it, nor did other members commenting, leading me to suspect that if I hadn't identified the camera I used as the V Lux he might not have "seen" image quality problems. The new V Lux 3 uses a different sensor (12+ megapixels in the new one vs. 14+ megapixels in the old one) so it might do better with low light performance. The spec sheet shows an additional stop of sensitivity. If that's the case, and if there is a really usable manual focus, I'd probably get one. Graf Lomo Posted March 10, 2012 Share #5 Posted March 10, 2012 I also own a V-Lux 1 and had the same thougts. In the end I keep my V-Lux 1 because it did all I want. You should look at the flickr fotostream of Thomas Brichta. He uses all three V-Lux's. Mabye it helps you.
jhluxton Posted March 11, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted March 11, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the various bits of feedback to my original question in particular the link to the Thomas Brichta Flickr gallery - the several seascapes give me some idea of how the camera performs in a marine environment. Important for my use as I photograph a lot ships. Yes I think I will make the move - what I will probably do is sell the C-Lux2 and the V-Lux 1 but retain the Digilux 3 for now. stuny Posted March 20, 2012 Share #8 Posted March 20, 2012 Bravo - I suspect you're thinking of "up-date" as similar to new firmware. It's not. They are different cameras.
