Movie Mode and the M10

I have to say that I have come 180 degrees on my view of Movie mode. Several years ago I was in the group that believed that it wasn't in the spirit of the M. Keep it simple. What changed my mind was the 5DII, that I sold almost a year ago. The video from that thing was jaw-dropping amazing. What made it great was the Canon L-lenses shot wide open. The images had a cinema quality. I really can't wait to see the images that the beautiful Leica lenses could produce.

Further, every once in a while I like using my G95 to capture a little video when we are on a trip or whatever. It is nice to play them back on the computer. It is a different experience than photos and I like the difference. But, the little POS doesn't give the cinema experience that the 5DII did, not even close.

I know I would use video mode. I wouldn't use it a lot. I'm not going to become a cinematographer. But, I can think of times on our last trip this past summer when it would have been nice to pan across a scene and take in the sights and sounds. It sure would be nice to have it all in one camera and through the Leica glass.

I really think video through Leica glass is going to blow people on this forum away once they see it. I know from previous posts that many on this forum just don't see it as a feature that should be in the M. Is anyone else looking forward to "Movie Mode?"

I agree with you Rick, it would be nice. You can however use M glass today to shoot video by using a NEX. It's of course not full frame so you don't get all the loveliness of the lenses towards the edges but it's a start. I did a test short with a NEX-C3 + Leica M a while ago and it was definitely fun to see how various M lenses rendered.

My conclusion overall in regards to the lenses was that they're not very suitable for any more serious type of video production as many of them are very compact and have focusing tabs - which precludes the use of a follow focus. However, for more informal video shoots, I think movie mode as an addition to a future M10 would be really nice.

I do have some understanding for the ones that oppose such a move, but it's too late already. The simple functional minimalism of the M series has already been lost with the way they did the M8/M9 (cloned a film camera rather than designed a digital camera from the ground up using the core principles of industrial design that made film M cameras so great). So it's really a question of closing the barn door after the horse is gone.

Rick now that you've thrown that hand grenade into the room, you had best stay in the room for the consequences ;)

Jaap I've started to stoke the braziers and have the tongs pre-heating.

Put me in the I want best possible quality photographs from the smallest, simplest camera body camp.

I'll check back in ten pages or so.

Assuming Leica goes for a CMOS sensor (or a more modern CCD design) as I fully expect them to have live view and movie mode as they are basically firmware updates. I know I often am tasked with producing movies as well as stills, a task that precludes bringing my M.

Actually, there would probably be a few hardware changes. A movie mode somewhere in a menu or a record button and a microphone or two. I would love a microphone for voice annotations -- easily one of my most missed features from my pro DSLRs.

Of course, there's debate as to whether a device as small as an M with electronic know-how and economies of scale (for a custom chip) of Leica would be capable of movie mode at reasonable datarates and battery life. If they continue with the lack of an AA filter I should very much expect downscaled movies to be a requirement that Leica could not easily meet, especially if they bump the MP count to remain competitive with the incoming wave of new FF DSLRs.

Funny. :p

Got that, but are you looking forward to Movie Mode at all? I suspect that you don't care. But, you won't mind if it doesn't place an extra button on the body that would get in the way of your RRS L-bracket. :D

Oh no you are not dragging me into the room to possibly suffer collateral damage from your shrapnel. The clue was that I want the best possible photograph quality from the simplest possible camera.

That; and I don't want your stinkin' video cluttering up a future M that I am bound to buy regardless. Haah, 2nd grenade thrown. See you in 20 pages now!

Clutter? Clutter? And, I suppose your RRS isn't clutter at to the highest fetishist degree. Look, you don't have to start with sound and video... just try a little "motion" picture mode. Later you can add sound and make a "talky." I bet RRS will even make some cool follow focus stuff and some cool brackets for video. Huh? Huh? I'm drawing you over to the dark-side now?

That niche is already covered like a blanket with developers other than RSS. Really, look around and come back. Most add-ons to DSLR videos are just abominations.

I've already looked around. You aren't the only one with google. And as far as an abomination... go tell Lucas films to stop using them.

What bloat? Just don't turn it on. Next argument please.

WTF do you know about doing video? You would turn a professional tool into an amateur's nightmare in a minute. I'm kill-filing this thread. It is just too silly.

So, you are saying that the 5DII is an amateur's nightmare? What do you know? Use your google and see what is being done with the 5DII... you might have to go back a couple of years as this is really old, old news.

Goodness I hope not. The fact that there is no video is one of the many things that attract me to the platform. Still photography, at it's essence.

Don't use it, then. See no evil, hear no evil...

Edit, welcome to the forum. :D:D:D
