Default Just sent M8 in for repair (not Solms)

Hi,
I just went to this camera repair shop here in the Netherlands as I was consistently getting bad focusing. I also just bought the 28 2.8 asph which had the same problem as was the Nokton. According to the camera repair shop, not only was the focusing off but also the up and down motion of the focusing mechanism was not stable. I opted not to send it to Solms as I would be without this camera for to long at this point. I have known this repair man for many years and he had serviced my M6, M4-2 and Nikon F2' s in the past and always done a good job.
The only lens which works flawless is the 15mm cv. But then again it doesn't use the
leica focusing mechanism
Eventually the M8 will have to go back to Solms, as I still have problems with the LCD which constantly changes brightness when viewing an image. Though I will wait for the camera return rush is over
And since I'm on a role here, what happend to QC at Leica. Would it be to much to ask for they cleaned the sensors prior to shipping?

Regards,

Etienne

I'm impressed you've found anyone outside Solms who will touch an M8... Leica UK will not.

Hi Etienne,

I have an M8 for roughly a month now. Two stays at Leica CS: the second one because of lots of dirt on the sensor after a weekend of normal use(...). Think of it any way you like, but CS cleaned it with no questions asked in less than a week. At least this issue is not a real problem, so give them a try :-)

However, their final quality control prior to shipping may be a problem...

Have fun with your M8

Regards, Jörg

Well he isn't from leica which maybe makes me dumb rather then brave as it would cancel out my warranty... Though like I said earlier he has done many repairs on analog Leica´s over the years so I do believe he knows enough about focusing mechanism. I would not let him work on the sensor though.

Regards,

Etienne.

Hi,

I just got my M8 back from the repair shop. He did a great job. I was starting to wonder if I had such bad eye sight as most pictures were out of focus (all but the 15mm). Well I'm glad to report that my eyes , eventhough not as good as when I was 20, are still able to focus the M. Total costs for repairing the focus and the up and down motion for the focusing mechanism was Euro 53. I could have sent it back to Solms but that would have taken much longer. It will eventually have to go to Solms for the LCD screen.
For those living in the Netherlands and dare to send their camera to a non authorised Leica repair shop, I can recommend Will van Manen in Zoetermeer. He has been working on Leica and Hassy's for many years and , I believe he does a great job.

Rgds,

Etienne

CS = Customer Service, probably.

Etienne, I have been putting off sending my M8 to Solms since everything seems to take 5 weeks at the moment, but it really needs adjustment for the focus mechanism. Do you have more information on where he is for those of us not in the Netherlands? Does he have a website or a phone number? Does he speak English (or German)?

Hi,
here is his web site: http://www.kamera-service.info/
I just tried it and it didn't work but should pobably work later on. It did yesterday. I believe he speaks english as most Dutch do. Will van Manen does camera repair for most of the camera shop in the region.
You should be aware that I believe any work done on your Leica by non-authorised dealer will probably cancel your warranty.

Regards,

Etienne
