Opted out of DL5-got LX5

Yep, got my LX5 two weeks ago. Loving its Leica glass. Can live without the Red Dot. I tape over the dot on my M series cameras anyway.

And it comes with a finger grip molded into the body at no extra expense.

Just wish spare batteries were available NOW. Patience.

Yeah after reading reports on LX/DL 5 they are the same camera, even Leica's head guy (Stefan Daniel) says IT IS the same camera.

I figure if it dies after a year, Pana warranty period, I can buy another with the money I saved.

And I get to use the camera in a few days, not weeks.

Patience not a virtue around here then...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again; I switched from Pana to Leica with the D-Lux 4. The deal maker for me was the separate, BIGGER hand-grip, instead of the vestigial one on the Panasonic. YMMV.

Regards,

Bill

Just bought one myself. Beautiful little camera, though not especially light weight. I found the grip on this one to be just right for my hands. Haven't seen the earlier version so I can't compare them.

I'm sorry to say that after a week of use of my LX5 I don't have the warm glow I had with the DLux4 although the LX5 has many features that I love.

There's something going on inside of the camera that I don't understand.

Sometimes the DLux4 image seems crisper and then other times the LX5 image looks better.

The jpeg processing is not so good with unexpected smearing at times and in some shots the loss of detail has been really disheartening.

Even the RAW files seem to show some processing although they are much better than the JPEGS and are the only way to go. ( Currently using Bibble and Silkypix to process although after conversion they will go into Lightroom )

I have noise settings at minimum and things like I Resolution set to OFF but I'm beginning to think that I've no place for a small sensor camera ; just glad I didn't spend more on the Leica version.

Now it will be really interesting to see if we can find genuine differences between the LX5 and DL5.

If I understand correctly one of the differences between the Leica and the Panasonic was different in camera software/processing/noise handling. So maybe the Leica is a better choice after all?

Still the small sensor effect on the image will remain, but texture may improve.

Sorry Leica but I could wait and the difference in price made me switch.

LX5 $457.95 @ B&H Upgrade to LR3 $100 = $557.95. Will arrive on or before 10/15/10.

Was told END of October for DL5. And we all know what that means, sometime in November.

As I mentioned in another thread, the DL5 has reached some UK dealers today. (12 Oct 10); so Well Done Leica!

If the processing tale was really true, why did Leica never officially confirm it? This speculation is now ongoing for years. Mostly initiated by D-Lux buyers who seem to have a need justifying the higher price.

I don't see how an official statement would harm Pana or Leica, unless the different processing was not true, of course. And therefore logic tells me silence means.......

I used to buy D-luxes, but switched over to the Pana with the LX3, when the price difference started to become obscene.

From Steve Huff's review:

The Leica D-Lux 5 will give you different firmware, different body style and looks, a 3 year warranty, and better software.

Whether different firmware is true or not is hard for me to judge, but extended warranty and software is an advantage I guess. In the comments of Steve Huff's review somone claims that a leica tech indicated it does differnt color processing. Again hard to judge.

Sadly, I deserted Leica for the LX5 as well...just a wonderful little camera! The grip is like the add-on I put on my DL3...just right. FYI...the live viewfinder (LVF) is a wonderful addition. Slips right on, has an adjustable diopter and button to switch from VF to monitor in a wink. And, it isn't bulky at all. Images are just the best...the low light being the most exciting. The perfect back up to my M9.

Agreed. The idea of firmware differences is as much a myth as is the one about the Leica versions having different lens coatings or the Panasonic cameras being made from the parts that Leica rejected.

I've yet to see anything official or indeed any photographic evidence any signficant differences. I say significant because it was interesting to note that someone with several Digilux 2 cameras posted photos that he had taken of the same subject, same time, with each camera and the exposure/colours were all slightly different.

I'm sure Leica would want to capitalise of their IP if there really was better tecnology within their versions.

It comes down to looks, accessories and warranty. You pay your money and take your choice. If resale value is a consideration it is true that the Leica versions seem to hold their value very well, another consideration for some.

Reynolds,

There is a chance for D-Lux5 to get custom grip, just like your D-lux4:

I took nippa's tip and ordered the Leica case for my LX5 and it works beautifully - fits like a glove. The wrist strap is just right for me and the length of the case's strap is great. Some may not care for a hard case, but I like it very much.

Now I have the best of both worlds.:D

P.S. Thank you Shootist for mentioning the B&H price drop. I called them and they did the same for me. Every little bit helps.

The firmware of LX3 and DLUX4 look very very different. That does not mean that the algorithms are not the same, or that the firmware of LX5 and DLUX5 are in the same relationship. I just remembered the same discussion going on for the LX3 and DLUX4 firmwares.

Based on what facts (data, documents) can you make this statement?
