Never seen a figure, but they do keep count of the shutter actuations, I can see a listing in the firmware which includes it. There's some magic sequence of buttons to press to call up the in-camera diagnostics but I haven't found it yet.
I'm sure's there's a test rig going click, click, click as we speak, I wonder more about the life of the motor than the shutter itself.

I thot it says guaranteed up to 100,000,000 miles and then you need to overhaul the engine block and modify it to a V8 engine? In the meantime, please change your oil every 2.5K and use synthetic *only*.
![]() Seriously, I did not see anything in print from Leica about warranty based on the number of actuations. I also did not see who Leica outsourced the design/implementation of the shutter mechanism to. Anyone know about that one? Or did Leica do that themselves? |

It's a Copal shutter isn't it? It's a major reason why the price difference between the M8 and the M7 is as small as it is. That cloth shutter costs a fortune to make.

If nobody knows about the guaranteed shuttert life ... any ideas about the expected shutterlife? Would it be more like 100.000 or 250.000 actuations? Comparable to a consumer or pro dslr ?

It is said by a Leica engineer in an interview in Leica News, that "the design of the shutter"was one of the main R&D efforts in the development of the M8. Definitely Solms, with parts mostly made in Germany, I think.

Unless you are in the habit of taking hundreds of shots of even the most mundane subject, I wouldn't worry about the life of the shutter. Replacement shutter assemblies are not usually an expensive repair (Canon charge around £150-200) and if it goes after c.100,000 actuations I think you will have had your money's worth. In any case, it'll be covered by the M8 warranty for the first two years.

There is a photo of the shutter on this review. It clearly is marked Copal. (Seiko makes Copal shutters I believe.)

I'm not sure why the warranty for the shutter would be any different than the warranty for the rest of the camera. My understanding is that the 2-year warranty covers everything, including the shutter, regardless of the number of actuations.

It was made by Copal but under Leica design and specs.
I see it when I visit the Leica plant here in Portugal. It was the same to R8/9 and second to the Leica responsable to my visit it was designed for 200.000 expositions.
