Ray Harms asked in another thread: how I am able to use the DR Summicron on the M8.
I started to make a long explanation here, but it may be better to just direct everyone to view this thread to learn about the DR/M8 relationship: http://www.leica-camera-user.com/dig...t=DR+Summicron Basically, I had a well known Leica repair person cut off the close focusing part of the lens flange, and remove the stop between normal and close range: DR-cut-for-web.jpg What I probably didn't convey correctly, is that I wanted to have a smooth transition from the normal range of the flange to the new machined surface. As you can see on the jpg of my lens above, this was not done as precisely as I had assumed it would be. I can focus the lens to 3'-4", which is the close focusing limit of the normal range of the lens, but it hits a rough spot at that point. Another problem is that too much material was taken away, and the close range isn't coupled accurately. If the machining was done correctly, I would have correct rangefinder coupling down to .7m where the rangefinder cam would fall off of the flange. As it is, I can only focus accurately down to 3'-4", and stop down and guess at closer range... I still plan to correct this, perhaps with someone with more precise machining capabilities, or maybe a rigid Summicron flange would work. As it is though, I am pretty happy about being able to use the lens with the M8, and I don't regret making the mod, although it's not for the weak of heart... |

David,
Thanks for the photos and explanation. I could actually do the machining myself, but don't think that I want to do that my DR. Just something sentimental about it. Oh well, my M5 will still be happy. Best, Ray |

Hi Ray,
I am also sentimental about this lens, that's why I had to use it on my M8. I am not suggesting that anyone do this to their lens, but I'm glad I did it. I just need to refine the process, so I get the most out of it. For the time being though, I'm perfectly happy using it beyond 3'-4". (Which is all I used it for before anyway...) Cheers, David. |

Mitchell,
The DR stands for Dual Range. It was a specific version of the Summicron that had a second closer focusing range when the additionaly eyepiece was mounted. Best, Ray |

David,
I know what you mean. The lens is soooo sharp, and with a lower level of contrast vs. the newer lenses that I think it would work out great on the M8. Best, Ray |
