Default I got a nice letter ...BFD

Today, (December 28th) I got a nice letter from Steven Lee, CEO of Leica. It is the same letter that I have seen discussed on other threads in this forum for the past several days.

What I really am looking forward to is the chance to ship my M8 back to Solms for the hardware upgrade.

I have read of many people in Europe and the Far East getting their cameras back already. I was okay with this until I read on Luminous Landscape that Michael already has his camera back. I guess there is a difference between my $4900 and other users. I have mostly been quiet and I have been patient. It’s a fine camera in B&W and it seems to me that a filter is a small price to pay for the “Leica Look” in color, particularly if they are going to give me the filters.

Before I really get mad, I would like to know the status of other users in North America.
Has anyone heard from Leica? Did they call, write, and send a magenta smoke signal? Am I the last poor shm%& with a camera that turns black into red with green blobs?

I'm in the same boat with you. No letter yet, no call, no nothing.

Sent mine off on Dec. 8; got a receipt back with a note that said it would be 4-5 weeks. I expect to see it around the third week of January. I'm not happy, but that's life in the big city, eh?

However you look at it, one way or another, you are in a queue. Someone has to be at the back. If it is you that's tough. It's also life. I too am in the queue. The hard part is 'we' don't know where we really are in the queue. So be it. Someone is working on it. I for one don't intend to distract them from their concentration.

I do have other cameras (too many!) to work/play with, so I will. My life goes on.

Cheers,
Erl

Is this doing it through Leica USA in New Jersey? 4-5 weeks sounds excessive to me. When Leica rang me before Christmas they talked about a 10 day turnaround period and picked it up yesterday on the understanding that they would have it back in my hands by January 10th (after which I need the camera for a job).

I called NJ, and they said send the camera to them. I did on Dec. 5th. They said not to expect it back until Jan.

If you want to send it in now call Leica US, but wait til the New Year.

Best,

Mitchell

What does BFD mean? All I can come up with is Boston Fire Department.

Did you get the email about revised pricing and did it have BFD in it too?

I hope you're kidding when you ask what it means.

Just in case you're not, BFD = Big "Fine" Deal.

Here "Fine" is the same "Fine" that is used in "RTFM = Read the 'Fine' Manual" and it is similar to "Foul" used in "FUBAR = 'Fouled Up Beyond All Repair".

A quick search on the 'net gave me this polite form: Big Freakin' Deal

You get the idea.

I like Boston Fire Dept, though.

Sorry, I was just trying to make a point.

I would have picked something more positive to say in my first or second post in a public forum.

Some of us can't afford an M8 yet. So, so sorry you were an early adopter and have early adopter disease. Other than that, no sympathy for ya.

No one in their right minds buys a bit of electronics with freshy fresh serial numbers. After all these years you would think that bit of reality would set in.

if it weren't for early adopters, the "freshy fresh" serial numbered electronics wouldn't be bought and thoroughly real-world tested.

where did you first learn about all the problems and quirks of the M8? from the official reviewers or those early adopters?
