Default Digital Photo Backup

It is probably the case that you have discussed this question in several threads and I have missed them. Any references and or advice you could offer would be appreciated.

I anticipate taking a lot of photos with my Digilux 2 and C-Lux 1 on an extended trip and am investigating methods of storing as well as backing up the photos. Are there ways to download photos to other media without having to carry a laptop computer or having to carry a large number of SD cards. I have not been a fan of increasing GB capacity on individual SD cards having had the experience of numerous digital media failures and the advertant damage to many 36 exposure rolls if 35mm film.

Thanks in advance for your help.

David,
Yes, a portable drive with a card reader built in is what you're looking for. Some can view pictures, some not. Prices vary from rather cheap to Epson's and JOBO's products that are top of the line in specs as well as price. Here is one recent thread I found: http://www.leica-camera-user.com/dig...highlight=jobo

HyperDrive Memory Card Backup Device - HyperDrive Memory Card Backup Device

This was talked about on a forum recently. I was searching for this same solution. I ordered & have not yet rec'd the hyperdrive.

A friend has an epson that shows the photos & his complaint with the unit is it is way slower than he's happy with & displaying photos is relatively slow. Not having any experience in those devices I pretty much restricted my investigation to devices that ONLY stored/moved files.

If you are travelling to a civilized country, there's a good chance of finding ciber-cafes or photo stores that would take your SD card pictures and burn them into a CD. That would be cheaper and also very convenient. Have done that myself a couple of times in Italy and Portugal

David, short of carrying the laptop (a recommendable option, of course), the portable hd is the way to go. I would do both because I keep multiple copies of my digital negs.

With regard to the portable hd, check the write specs, carefully. Since getting a Sandisk Imagemate 12-in-1 card reader, I have discovered how FAST uploads can be. Now, I am extremely dissatisfied with my portable hd because it takes more then 10 times as long to write the files from the SD card.
