Hi , well Murphy's law seems to always bite you in the butt. I was shooting a golf tourney today happly going along with the DMR and 180 / M8 and the 75 cron and right in the middle of shooting the M8 it died. Dead as a door nail. Switched batteries , nothing. i can press the shutter but it won't fire. So came home in middle of the shoot , luckly 3 miles away to grab the rest of the DMR gear and tried again, got it to fire and see imge on playback. But no menu and no set and now no playback and now also no shutter. It's a dead horse. I have several calls out there but bottom line is i am screwed for a time right now. it has to go to NJ or Germany or whatever happens to it happens. But i NEED a M8 by Wednesday. So if anyone or any dealer wants to help a Pro out that is in serious dilemma , I have my Amex card out ready to buy the second one today. I am on the hunt , i just don't have the time to dick around with a repair or anything. Need a working camera now. So please if anyone hears of one please call me 602 743-4973 and I thank you in advance. I am saddened that i have to post this becuase i have nothing but high hopes for the M8 and i really do like it a lot. Not sure what is going on but i would even reload the firmware if i could or it was avaliable. I know Leica and dealers do read the threads , please call me with any info that could help. Also i am not mad at leica or anyone this crap just happens been shooting digital far to long not to have these issues bite me in the butt

I know another person this happened to and his camera had to go back to Solms. I don't know if this is one of the "bugs" being worked out by firmware, but I sure as heck hope so.

I really know who you felt. I had something similiar once. Shooting a Tennis match. I used my second 5D body, and after around 20 shots it died. it told me battery is empty... I really thought "what da heck..." I charged that one the hole night. So I went back, put a new in and started to shoot the second match. Oh yes this time I got around 35 images before it died...
Luckily I had my 1DsMk2 with me... I had to back up more because of the lound camera, but it worked out ok. To make the long story short. It was send to canon for repair and there was a failure in some "cables" and so the battery was discaharging really fast... |

Yes it seems I have a electrical connection that is off becuase it is doing different things. So you can't pinpoint one thing. Sounds like a trip to Solms and get everything done at once

Lord am I sorry for you! What I hear is that addict feeling about the camera. It's like digital crack. I'd lend you mine like a shot to thank you for all the good help you've given us but I'm in England... Hope you find one.

The heart breaker is pushing the shutter and there is nothing there. That hurts

I'm *only* asking because I had my DMR go down in the middle of a wedding 2 weeks ago. Newly charged battery, shoot shoot shoot--> dead. (I have a 5d backup, so it was ok, but)... Turned out it was the battery. My new spare battery, and it just would not hold a charge at all. Said it was charging, but no power to camera. I know it's the battery because 1) AC works and 2) three other batteries (yes, I have lots for DMR!) all work, though I only had two with me. You probably checked this already, but I haven't been able to even BUY an M8 spare yet! Gosh I hope they get you a fixed M8 like right now.

I have 3 batteries and tried them all and different cards. I may have found a M8 brand new from the old batch from a dealer that is a return , never opened . So i might be okay than send this one to Solms.

Now I have it firing and can see the images but can't set the menu or set button or info. It's weird. Turn camera off than on and it's dead again

Hi Guy,
Your posts have been great everywhere, and were instrumental in my decision to get my M8. Mine died a couple of times, but bottom plate and battery removal solved it (I could view pictures, but nothing else). I know you've had kind offers of loaners, etc, but Dave Elwell at Leica in NJ is really helpful. I wonder if there's a crazy boot sequence that no one knows about, like with a Mac (hold down protect and menu while turning on) or something. Or maybe try it tethered. This kind of problem reminds me of a computer, that's all. Also, Jean Bardaji at leicaboutique.com in Montreal has batteries. Later -- Jon (neuer benutzer and killer of threads). Guy, this may be a longshot but if the internal logic/CPU does need resetting you may have to leave the battery out for several hours until the camera forgets the time and date. It probably has an internal cell/capacitor (that's charged from the battery) to supply the clock/CPU etc. when the battery is removed for charging.
