Visiting the German forum

With the new system here, how many "International" users visit the German side of the forum more often than before?

I am afraid that I don't. The text that accompanies the pictures is much more important to me appreciating the work than I would have imagined, and trying to translate in Google is just not satisfactory.

Therefore I don't go there any more often than I did on the old forum. Odd really.

I pop over from time to time to look at the photos. I'm not too bothered about not understanding the text as personally it's the image I'm interested in. As here there are a range of talents and my main interests, people and travel, remain the same.

I suspect there's probably more traffic in the opposite direction :-)

Yep! And this is one of the most fascinating things in the new forum. During a short time I have seen many interesting photographs from many interesting people.

It's the site of the AODCR (Associtaion of Digital Camera Refusers). I will show some images here and ask for comments.

As you can see, I was in the USA, last year... my favourite is the one on the very right.

Except one image, I used an M6.

As my wife often says: "Learn f**ing German, why don't you!" but as I live in a German speaking country, she has a point...

I visit occasionally but have not posted there (too embarrarssed by my bad German). But you are right - the photo is only half the story. Allan Brewer posts in both - wonder what he has to say about this?

It is a problem with British education - IMHO. Foreign language teaching back in the 70's was as useful and as exciting as reading a book about it.

I've been visiting the German forum and trying my best to make myself understood.

My employer is Switzerland-based and I've been trying to learn a little German. Not an easy language, but I'm sure they say the same of English...... or whatever it is we speak here in the States.

I've found www.freetranslation.com of some use, but I try to carefully select the words that I'm asking it to translate. No need to tick anyone off unless it's intentional. :-)

Well, language is a problem.. but a good chance, also, to make an effort, and learn something about german (as I'm doing with my limited english).
In any case, gradually, I'm sure that all we shall win with it.

I do find it a pity that the image forums are still separated. Why not combine them? Does it really matter if you don't understand everything written about your photo? I'm sure people would make an effort to respond in the language of the original post anyway.

The best idea so far.
Maybe some of the german members would be annoyed. But most of them can read/understand english and write some simple answers.

If nothing else helps, we can still use google

Someone seemed to be getting annoyed when I made a post in the first week of the new forum, on the German side, and I have not really been back since. I don't want to upset anyone by inadvertently making an offensive post.

I come from the german side....and I'm very happy with the "club together"...I'm mostly in the "international Room" but from time to time I like to talk in my language, it is easier to do jokes and I have a lot of friends from the old forum...
..but I hope that I find friends in the "new international forum"..with my bad english and my pictures and I hope you will like to see them....

Ronald Schmidt's english got better at the old forum, either or we made a big improvement on our german.

You english is fantastic.

At the old forum we do have a few friends from the german forum who visit at a regular basis and post their images.
Not to mention a few germans from Philadelphia, Virginia and Ohio... 10th generation american born though.

Once in a while a few friends post in german.
No problem with that.

Even if I cannot read the language, I enjoy photography and therefore browse the combined forum images. We are richer for it.

I have been looking over the fence in the old forum for quite some time (the other side of the fence is the English one for me, as I am German), and almost always found it interesting. Great photogs over there, Brent Nicastro, Allan Brewer, Doug Herr and Jaak Ennuste spring to my mind (although their work is quite different, I believe they all have a very good eye), but there are many others, too. Phil Faros' work was great, too, haven't seen him posting for quite a while now, unfortunately.

Good thing about the new forum is that you do not seem to require two separate identies (as in the old one), so I have chosen to just revive my original 'German' identity.

Let's have fun together in the new forum!

P.S.: Andy (Barton, that is), don't be afraid of the German speaking forum, I wouldn't hesitate to post over there if I were you. It's just that some of the German folks don't know English very well (although a lot of them do).

Andy, I think you should try again; but make an attempt to speak the German language, even if Google is the only tool you have right now.

My experience has been natives will appreciate your effort and reward it by helping you, and in the end you learn.

Thank you Ravindar, and Andreas, for noticing my pictures! As an amateur, I've never asked much more than others' honest feedback regarding my efforts. It is really wonderful to hear my named mentioned with photographers who are, quite frankly, far and away superior in every way to my meager abilities.

Personally, I really enjoy both the duality of the Forum and the cross-over. The German side is its own little club with its own unique interests (try posting anything over there now that the Germans are in the semi's of the Cup and see how hard it is to get their attention!). And the members from that side that enrich the International Forum include both old friends (Peter Hohsl, Ron, Rolf Adam, Stefan Rohner) and new (Jan, Bernd, Klaus, and many others). Vive la difference!
