I have looked at a black paint lens that has a product code of 11623 on the box. Lens serial number begins with 4010 and is an E46 with slide out lens hood. Is the same as the 11868? I am being told it is the same as the latest pre-asph before the asph came out. Any help would be appreciated. I have not found a website that gives all product codes and descriptions. Thanks, Frank

The 50/1.4 ASPH replaced the classic Summilux which dated from around the early 60's; notably soft wide open but still a nice lens; the original mount was replaced with the version with the slide-out hood but the optical cell remained the same. That was the last version before the ASPH was introduced and the serial number suggests it is a late example.

Like Mark said - plus: The version of the 50 pre-ASPH with a slide-out hood (E46 filters) also focuses as close as .7 meters, whereas the earlier versions with a separate hood (E43 filters) were limited to 1 meter. The pre-ASPH has a lip on the front of the hood, a wider band of knurling on the focus ring, and no focusing tab, and it is quite a bit lighter than the ASPH.

As a lens that started production in 1961, and stayed in production for 40+ years, there are a great many "models" that share the same basic optics: chrome, black anodized, black paint, with or without sliding shades, etc.

Those that are black paint (red and white engraving) AND have sliding hoods were mostly made for the 2000 Millenium and 2001 LHSA* commemorative M6 cameras and tend to be a bit more expensive (although not terribly rare - there are a lot of them for sale).

Yes it is the millenium edition of the 11868 AFAIK.

It took awhile ..but I finally found a mint copy of the black paint pre asph 50. The price will vary a lot based on the condition as its still somewhat of a collectors item.

This maybe my favorite M lens because of the way it renders. Wide open its similar(not quite as pronounced ) to the Noctilux. It has the Leica glow and low(soft) contrast yet is still fairly sharp. Stopped down its similar to most any of the current Leica M lenses. This provides quite a bit of flexibility and with digital...its easy to increase the contrast to fit the image.

This lens paired with any of the wideangles (21/24/28) makes an ideal set for travel or street shooting.
