Albert4321 Posted December 16, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 16, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) What is Leica MP-3? anyone have the spec and the production date. I know it is older than the current MP model. But it looks really nice and really expensive in the used market.
Advertisement Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 Hi Albert4321, Take a look here What is Leica MP-3?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
enboe Posted December 16, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 16, 2008 The MP-3 is actually newer than the current MP. It was a special model created for the LHSA. It incorporated some of the features, such as the manual frame counter, of the original 1950's MP's. I'm sure others can add more details. elmarman Posted December 16, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 16, 2008 Isn't it a thing which plays music and you plug in some earphones?
elansprint72 Posted December 16, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 16, 2008 Isn't it a thing which plays music and you plug in some earphones? Yeah, it's like a very small gramophone, but without the cute dog.
ddp Posted December 16, 2008 Share #5 Posted December 16, 2008 As noted above - it was a limited edition body made for the LHSA. 500 bodies in black paint, 500 in chrome. There were also matching Leicavits and 50 1.4 Summilux asph available as well. I personally think it's the best handling and nicest looking M body I've used...that's just my opinion of course. mongrelnomad Posted December 16, 2008 Share #6 Posted December 16, 2008 As said above, the MP-3 is the nicest Leica I've had the pleasure of using. They made 1000 bodies - 500 chrome, 500 black paint, and some came as part of a set with a matching-numbers Leicavit MP and retro-designed 50mm Summilux ASPH. The 'oily bits' are pure MP - that means a fully mechanical metered body. However, to that it ads: - Vulkanite Finish - M2 framecounter - 35-50-90 framelines - M3 top-plate - M3 Leica Engraving Small differences (and some are available a la carte), but they really make the camera an absolute joy to use. My chrome set is my go-to low ISO (up to 400) shooter.
peter_n Posted December 16, 2008 Share #7 Posted December 16, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use a black MP3 as my carry-round and agree with the above - it is a great user. However I think that for many it is a collector's item and you may find silly prices being asked as a result, a real pity.
Albert4321 Posted December 16, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted December 16, 2008 Thanks all for the info. ddp, wow, this is beautifull. Does the MP-3 has TTL metering like the current MP?
mongrelnomad Posted December 16, 2008 Share #9 Posted December 16, 2008 Thanks all for the info. ddp, wow, this is beautifull. Does the MP-3 has TTL metering like the current MP? For all intents and purposes it IS a current MP. A really really lovely camera.
peter_n Posted December 17, 2008 Share #10 Posted December 17, 2008 As Julian says, it is more-or-less a current MP in most respects. The thing that I really like about it is the solitary framelines for 35, 50 and 90mm lenses. I got a taste for those from using a Voigtlander R4 which has a solitary 28mm frameline. The MP3 has a 0.72x magnification, BTW. Below is a pic of mine sporting a 35mm Summicron v1. Welcome, dear visitor! Albert4321 Posted December 17, 2008 Author Share #11 Posted December 17, 2008 Peter, that is a lovely pic. I have a 28 Cron ASPH & 50mm f/1.4 ASPH for my M8, what happen if I mount a 28mm lens to the MP-3? I have to use an external finder for framing? doubice Posted December 17, 2008 Share #12 Posted December 17, 2008 I have a 28 Cron ASPH & 50mm f/1.4 ASPH for my M8, what happen if I mount a 28mm lens to the MP-3? I have to use an external finder for framing? As the MP-3 has a 0.72 magnification but no 28mm frame, you could use the whole finder area to estimate the view of the 28mm lens. An accessory 28mm finder would of course be more accurate but, also less convenient. Best, Jan
peter_n Posted December 17, 2008 Share #13 Posted December 17, 2008 Yes, what Jan said. Actually, I think I've only ever used a 35mm lens on mine. I have three 35s and the most used is the Summicron ASPH which is also a BP lens.
ddp Posted December 17, 2008 Share #14 Posted December 17, 2008 ddp, wow, this is beautifull. Thank you! I'm glad to see others using this camera as well. The MP3 is my main camera...and as others have stated - the simplicity of the framelines is very attractive to me. I'm glad i was able to snag one while they were priced somewhat "normally." SJP Posted December 17, 2008 Share #15 Posted December 17, 2008 Normally I prefer the chrome Leica's but the black paint MP-3 looks breathtakingly good. I guess a chrome MP-3 is close to a M2, at least in appearance?

I guess a chrome MP-3 is close to a M2, at least in appearance? It looks just like an M3, with the M2 counter. I guess I'll just have to take a photo of my chrome baby... Ivar B Posted December 17, 2008 Share #17 Posted December 17, 2008 I have the chrome one, and IMHO it is the nicest Leica M ever made. Welcome, dear visitor! luigi bertolotti Posted December 17, 2008 Share #19 Posted December 17, 2008 WOW, a set of delicious pictures of a splendid item, and... to ddp ... I TOOK NOTE of the "Aspherical 35"... A detail I don't know... is this the only model to have "Solms" quoted in the top engraving ?
mongrelnomad Posted December 18, 2008 Share #20 Posted December 18, 2008 [/u] A detail I don't know... is this the only model to have "Solms" quoted in the top engraving ? Now you mention it... Just checked the a-la-carte site: the engraving there is distinctly missing the "Solms"...
