Retrofitting MP VF/RF in M6 TTL 0.85

Hi All,

I've had a look through some previous threads regarding what seems to be known as 'rangefinder patch whiteout' that appears to affect bodies pre (new) MP and updated M7.

I noted that some people in the US managed to get the RF/VF on their M7s changed for MP ones, has anyone in the UK had their M6 TTL 0.85 VF/RF removed and replaced by the supposedly less whiteout prone MP VF/RF at Leica UK? If so how much did it cost and was it worthwhile?

On the whole I find the system in the M6 TTL 0.85 works fine, but I do on occasion have problems focussing due to the whiteout in tricky lighting which has resulted in my missing the 'decisive moment' and would seriously consider the upgrade if it eliminates the problem.

Look forward to any anyone's input.

Many thanks in advance.

you find the information that Leica used to change the framelines of the first M7s to the newer MP-viewfinder without charges (!). Later they charged 300,- €

This would be a reasonable price for the change from M6-viewfinder to MP and it would even be rather "cheap" compared to the upgrate of M8-framelines.

I had my M7 VF upgraded to the MP type for free by Leica NJ but the body is a US Passport and is under warranty. It is likely that you'll find an independent shop will be less expensive so you might want to get a quote from Leica MK and then get one from CRR as well.

I had my M6 ttl 0,85 RF/VF changed to the MP RF/VF by Leica in Solms, some 6 months ago. I payed about 300,00 euros. I think that it's precisely with the 0,85 RF/VF where you notice the improving "against light" viewing (at least, comparing with the 0,58 VF/RF).

Thank you to all who've posted, very useful info indeed. I will speak to Leica as a starting point and cross ref. with others for value - can anyone recommend a capable and trustworthy engineer in London? Good to hear that it makes a noticeable difference with the 0.85 as it has been a bit of a problem.

Best to you,
