Leica CL meter

As a practice camera until the digital M is available, I have bought an CL incl. 40/F2.

Neat little camera which I got quite cheap. Approx. 200$. However the meter doesn't seem to work. Does anybody know whether this is common and what the cause might be?

I have inserted new battery but only 1,5 volt is available compared to the original 1,35. But that shouldn't be an issue?

Wonder how the f2/ 40 is goint to be on the M8. Like a 50mm. approx.

Nikolaj,

I also have a CL and enjoy it. Word of caution. As Metroman pointed out you will need the battery adapter. But, also, you should send the camera to Leica to get the Cds cell replaced and the camera meter calibrated with the adapter and battery. If you do this the meter accuracy will be very good and a pleasure to use. The Cds cells tend to loose their capability over time becoming non-linear and will eventually stop working.

Nikolaj -

It is not very obvious, but to turn on the meter you have to have the advance lever pulled out from the body, as though you were about to wind it.

Stuart I had forgotten about that - caught me out too

Nikolaj, one other thought if you have not read it on my links is:

"With the CL meter, above the center line is underexposure and below the line is overexposure!"

Not mentioned in the manual that I can see!

If you need to view the manual it is online here.

Hi Metroman,

to my fortune I had already read about the upside down meter before I shot the first roll which by the way was shot without any metering so can't wait to see the results;))

Thanks for the link to the manual; I have search fairly quickly on google but couldn't find so your link was a helper...

Just tried to pull the lever from the body and suddenly the meter works; Thank Stuart.

Does anybody have experience with the 40/f2 for an M camera?

Yes but the meter will be off with a 1.5V battery. Your best bet is to get the adapter.

I have a CL and use the adapter, works very well. You can also have the meter calibrated for 1.5V batteries.

I have 2 of the 40 Summicrons and they work just find on all M cameras I've ever used them on, even the M8. One thing though is they don't have a standard filter thread but you can thread in a 39mm filter part way.

Oh if the meter does die that's it, there are NO replacement cells available.

Ed - You can still get them replaced here in the UK. See the "Leica CL 1" link in my post above under my old forum name - Metroman. I did have info on a US repair shop but cannot find it. As you say the adapter is worth getting.

Carbonadam - I have the manual in PDF format if you need one.
