Default Latest service at Leica - New Jersey

We got back from Borneo on 8th May and I visited Leica New Jersey on 9th May: My R8/DMR was overexpsoing grossly and eventually jammed a few times, and not too long after that wouldn't turn on -- Not with three different charged batteries; not even by reseating the DMR.

A week after I left it I received an estimate (some free work on the DMR - Battery card and update, several things to the R8 for about US$230), and a promise to return it in 5 to 6 weeks.

It arrived yesterday (4 weeks to the day after bringining it to them) seeming good as new, even thought the R8 was almost 9 years old.

There have been a number of complaints on this Forum about Leica service in New Jersey and in Solms, but this is the 6th or 7th time I've had some Leica service, and it has always been profressional, satisfiing, usually returned before promised, and never returned late.

I'll second that.

Allendale coded some lenses that that got back in three weeks; and they completely reworked an M8, even correcting matters that I hadn't complained about (e.g. rough shutter release). Did a beautiful job.

And praise for both New Jersey and Solms:

I have the first version (Canadian) 75/1.4. I had been happy with it till I started shooting it on the M8, when I discovered that it backfocused noticeably (at a distance of ca 30 feet, it was backfocusing by about 10 feet).

I sent it to NJ for coding and to have the backfocusing looked at. Allendale forwarded the lens to Solms. After about 9 weeks, the lens came back working beautifully. NJ charged for the coding, but Solms' reworking of the lens was done at n/c.

I don't think there's another company that would do no charge repairs on a product thirty years old.

(Of course, if Herr Kaufmann finds out about that, the repair estimator may be out of a job. )
