Default Leica security advise please

In the 80's when I had an R3 one was advised to put black insulation tape over the Leica name and logo to make the camera less prone to theft when out and about. Is this still a recommended practice on R series cameras or has the theft emphasis now shifted to the steel-able digital SLR's

A waste of time IMHO. Most thieves are opportunists who'll steal whatever they can whether it's a Canon, Nikon, or Leica with the company name taped over.

I still have my '80's' R3. I've never taped over it and it's never been stolen.

If a thief is smart enough to recognize the red dot he is smart enough to recognize the camera in general. Taping the dot is living with a myth... Leicas are not very attractive anyway. Too few buttons....

I wear an Omega but I've taped over the face to deter thieves.

Bill

ROTF LMAO. Coffee spit everywhere. Almost cost me a new keyboard, but it was worth it. Yep, that pretty much sums up the logic behind taping over the camera's name.

In the 80s I went to a lecture given by a documentary photographer who took pictures of drug addicts in bad parts of cities using an M6. Somebody asked if he was nervous carrying (at the time) a thousand dollars or equipment around in those areas.

The photographer answered, that people mostly asked him why he was carrying such an old camera and not a Nikon or Canon. People probably think the same way about an R3, especially since it isn't even the current model, why is he using such an old camera and not a digital?
