Oh, I should have known better when I posted that photo.

I think the simplicity of it is that it's a great photo and a great camera in it.

Here's a link to the interview for those of you who are interested (as well as more photos):

Probably Tag Huer I have seen him in advertising shots so he is/was under contract. At least camera manufaturers have not gone to those lengths- yet.

The watch is a Breitling Emergency, the bottom knob unscrews and an antenna comes out sending out a distress beacon. It was originally only available to pilots.

Not only is he a TAG spokesman, but in Japan he does (or did) ads for a jewelry store that sold used Rolexes.

I don't see why an actor wouldn't be a photographer. They have lots of down time and they are often in exotic locations and why not spend you time taking photos. People call Leicas a doctors camera so why shouldn't millionaire actors use Leicas as well?

Add to that you have directors, photographers, set designers, art directors, light people and all available for technical questions and tricks.

I got into Leica when I met an instructor who always carried a Minilux in his belt.

There's not long from being a film geek to being a Leica geek.

I thought you were pulling a fast one on us. Then I Googled and was immediately terrified: Breitling : Emergency

Then, the obvious question. . . . Why doesn't my M8 have an emergency transmitter?

If you use it "in anger", they give you a new one (it's worth it to them for the publicity). If you use it accidentally, you face a bill for the rescue services... helicopter, lifeboat, etc...

Still want your M8 to have one...?

Regards,

Bill

When "Castaway" came out, I thought if Tom Hanks had one of those watches the movie would be over in minutes.

The power isn't great on the transmitter so somebody needs to be listening for the signal. I guess the best thing to do would be wait until you saw rescue planes and then activate it.

I agree it is a pretty cool watch, but much to expensive for me to rationalize having one. Especially since I hardly ever fly

They would need big ears to hear it! Wasn't Steve Fossett wearing one when he disappeared?

Whether we want it or not: Product placement in movies works. I also saw this photo with Seal and his M8. Now, does this have any influence on me? In this case definitelely no.

Things were different if Karl Lagerfeld (as an excellent photographer) would use a Leica-M, this might effect even "serious" photographers....
