Default too expensive

The top cover of my M8 is scraped a little bit, I was willing to have it replaced, I called local service office today, they told me it will cost me bout 1000 $US. It's unbelievable....

Why replace it? A few scratches and scrapes add character and you'll also stop worrying about dinging the camera up.

Alternatively, if the top plate was really barked up to the point the camera was unservicable, you could have the plate replaced at a thousand US and that would be cheap.

...leica advertises that the top and bottom plates are cut from solid brass blocks...and commodities prices (brass, copper, gold, etc.) being where they are today...well...

Doubt it. They would be die pressed brass wouldnt they? Maybe they machine them to clean them up a bit but you would want the grain characteristics of die stamping.

I think they are milled from solid and I expect a replacement would also have the three windows and rear viewfinder lens; might also have the hot shoe pre-fitted since it is sealed with silicone sealant.

It may be only 7 screws to remove it but then the shutter release, shutter speed dial, mode switch, LCD display and electronics flex print has to be moved to the new top and then everything tested. So it's expensive but not that expensive.

Don Goldberg (DAG) might ask less for that.

As matter as the fact, what I need is only the top cover. And, are you sure the top cover inclusive of all these stuffs? If so, the price sounds reasonable.

Look at my anatomy thread and you'll see all the parts inside which need to be transferred across.

He might, but he would still have to buy the part from Leica and do all the work.

I dropped one of mine ( well, actually I had a small conflict with a mountainside ) New top plate, new handgrip, new shutter, new front body shell, shifted sensor realigned, Summicron 35 asph focussing unsnarled: 1750 Euro...

I had an M4-2 run over by a bus way back: Top plate, bottom plate, rangefinder adjusted, some odds and ends: 1600 German Marks at a time when the body cost less than 3000.

700 Euro for an M8 top plate is getting to look like a bargain...
