I have a three to four year old MP. I have out maybe sixty rolls of film through this camera. As far as I know, it's working fine.
So the question is: do I need to get it serviced, checked, tuned up, oiled, whatever? What is the proper thing to do here? I want to hand this gem off to the next generation... I presume an MP could last fifty years, but to get there, does it need servicing regularly? How regularly, and finally... Where do I send it? I live in central North Carolina. Thanks for your advice. |

Save your money.
Run the shutter through the speeds once a year. Unless used heavily; I'd wait for something to go wrong. At 60 rolls, the thing is barely broken in.

If it's working ok, maybe one every 10-15 years?
The best way of keeping it in good condition is to use it as often as possible.

Had mine CLA'd after about 500 rolls shot in hostile dusty an moist conditions.
I dropped it a number of times, no damage from that. The thing seems almost indestructable;-) There was dust in the viewfinder and particles inside that often blocked the shutter curtain and caused overexposed vertical lines in the image. No such problems? Shoot! Perhaps it is wise to have it looked after when you have it in use for ten years or so. |

If it aint broke............
I had my M2 CLA'd when I bought it - actually the shutter was faulty so it had to be done. My lllf hasn't be serviced since I bought it about 24 years ago, a Leica tech checked the shutter once and it was running pretty accurately. |

WHEN the time comes that it needs servicing, let me recommend Don Goldberg (DAG) or Sherry Krauter. You can do a quick search for their phone numbers or e-mail addresses. Both of these folks are true gems!

'I want to hand this gem off to the next generation...'
Make sure you have a good description (and some samples maybe) of film. It may not be that obvious how to use it without it or where to find it.

Grandad, it's me, Rolo ........
Check your fastest speeds, 1/1000s etc. If your camera is 4 years old, and it sat on the shelf for two years before you bought it, and you've never used 1/1000s then it will need exercise. Mine failed after 18 months and was fixed under warranty by Leica. It will last a lifetime with just a little care and it will take a lot of abuse if it's used regularly. Put a film through and if all is OK, just send it on. I'm waiting. Rolo
