Default What is a "3 Cam Lens"?

I am looking at buying a 90/2, and have seen some that are a "3 Cam Lens". Can anyone tell me what this means? Thanks.

I tried searching, but it won't let me search for "3", or "cam".

If I were you I'd reconsider. Check out the 75 f/2.0 ASPH. It much smaller and lighter, easier to focus and a great portrait lens. The 90 is quite cumbersome.

A 3 cam lens refers to the lobes on the lens mount of R lenses. 3-cam lenses work with most of the recent R SLRs, including the R8 and R9. However, those two SLRs and th e most recent R lensesalso have electronic contacts (called ROM) that are useful in certain instances, such as capturing lens info on DMR photos, and for adjusting the "focal length" of adjustable flash units that have Leica adapters. Other Forum members can tell you which Leica SLRs work with 3-cam lenses.

Cams on R lenses refer to the various dohickies that tell the camera's meter what aperture the lens is set at.

3-cam lenses work with every Leica reflex body from the Leicaflex SL2 through the R9; most 3-cam lenses also work with the Leicaflex SL, and with a very minor modification to the body, most will also work on the Leicaflex Standard. If you want a lens for a rangefinder camera you don't want a 1-cam, 2-cam, 3-cam, 3rd-cam or ROM lens. These are for reflex bodies only.

Thank you, obviously not for an "M" camera.

FWIW there's also a detailed topic on Leica R Cams in the FAQ I maintain, at:

Leica FAQ - Why do R lenses come in 2/3-CAM or ROM mounts?

I particularly like the subtitle - "The Ascent of Cam"
