Hi,

Anybody had dealings with "Wilkinson Cameras" online store?

I'm looking to buy my first Leica and they are advertising the M9(240) for at least £350 cheaper, that's including the current £500 cashback promo, than any other retailer online or otherwise.

Thanks,

Dave.

Yes, they are authorised dealers and in my experience are 100% reliable. I have also noticed that they have been discounting many of their Leica products quite heavily over the last month – £3799 for the M240, £1999 for both the 75/F2 and 50 Summilux (since sold out on that one) are very good prices, even in the currently soft UK market for Leica stuff.

Wilkinsons seems to be a reputable camera firm with several shops across the North-West of England, also having a reasonable selection of Leica lenses available in their Liverpool shop.

Last Spring I bought a 50 Summilux via their Preston store for a really good price (initially I was going via their website, but I called them instead and decided just to pick it up in person as I don't live too far away...). More recently I bought a Fuji X-Pro1 for my son as a Xmas present from their Warrington shop, so I have no qualms at all about dealing with them.

I too noticed the very good prices they have on the M240 at the moment, but unfortunately I already bought mine at full price last year elsewhere. If I were in your position I'd call the website number as I did and have a chat with the staff - just to double check these cameras are UK issue/whether new or ex-demo etc., and to put your mind at ease about dealing with them.

I hope all goes well for you - maybe you'd like to share your findings if you do go ahead...

I've bought used stuff from them a few times - they've always been very helpful on the phone and absolutely accurate in descriptions so I can't see that they'd be any different for new. I'd certainly talk to them via the 'phone to confirm everything first but would happily buy from them again.

Hoping the prices will hold until the middle of Jan.

Dave.

The banner on the website's homepage says its post Xmas sale offers are good until 4 January. The previous Wilkinson price for the M240 was £3,999 which is what I am expecting it to revert to.

Hi,

The £3799 price was advertised before the Boxing Day sale started.

Unfortunately situation dictates that I'm not able to buy/order until funds are in place which will be in a couple of weeks.

I'll try contacting them tomorrow but maybe I'll have to take a chance.

Cheers,

Dave.

I have used Wilkinson in the past and found them ok. I notice you are from London so I would reccomend Red Dot who give a great service and are very nice people. Not so sure about Elvis the night watchman so dont go before 9.30am. Seriously I would give them a call and tell them about the deal you have seen, nothing to loose and if anything was to go wrong they will give good service.

I did not see the lower price before the sale started, so hopefully lowering the price prior to Xmas is a positive indication.

Forgot to add that I have dealt with Wilkinson a couple of times and always had good service. I bought my first Leica from them and they happily returned a lens to Leica on my behalf. The 14 month delay in getting a replacement was down to Leica, not them.

Why not ring and say when your funds will become available and could they sell camera at same low price later, if you place a reserve or suggest a deposit? It's a couple of years since i ordered from them but delivery was prompt and transaction wholly satisfactory. BTW I note certain Canon inks (BC1 type) are about half the price of other retailers' listings.

Red Dot don't reopen until 8th January. They currently show the M240 at £4299 black or silver. But Wilkinson's £3799 black (silver out of stock) is amazing! :)

Can not agree that it is "amazing", it's the law of supply and demand. Not an awfull lot of demand but plenty of supply.:D . I doubt if with the exception of Leica in Mayfair that any dealer would refuse to deal . A new camera is on its way later in the year and the dealers will have used M 240 cameras coming out of there ears.

That has not stopped Leica increasing the price of the M body by £150 on 1 January. The Leica Mayfair website is now showing the price as £5,250, rather than £5,100 as previously.

Correct, but for stock a dealer is holding depending on how he funds his stock they often need to move it quickly, especially as the camera is not in the position of demand is was 12 months ago. Don't forget that the retail price includes a margin. What the dealer does with it is up to the dealer. I look at the price as a salesman and you can be as sure as the sun rising that no matter how good the deal or price is the dealer will make a profit.Thats why they are there.

My remark was not about the dealer's margin and reasons for selling well below list, but Leica increasing the price of a camera which you claim is in plentiful supply at a time when demand is low. If Leica maintains the cycle of the previous digital Ms, a replacement will be announced later this year, which is presumably one reason for potential purchasers holding back. It is more usual for a digital camera to reduce in price over its lifetime to counteract that effect and the M has been around for two years now.

The price rise in RRP is presumably more to do with positioning the price of the replacement body later this year than anything to do with the demand for the current model (which is clearly quite soft).

I have wondered about that as well. It is strange to raise the price during the period of a promotion to make the camera more attractive to potential buyers by reducing the cost. The increase does not apply in the US until 1 February, when the sales campaign has finished.

Hi,

Thanks for all the input much appreciated.

Unfortunately Wilkinson's are now showing out of stock on both the Silver and Black bodies.

I will contact them tomorrow to see what the situation is on re-stocking but I doubt the price will be the same.

Seems I've missed the boat but will still pursue the Leica dream.

Cheers,

Dave.

I assume that Leica Mayfair have a demand for M240 as they are offering upgrades to M9 owners who have damaged sensors as an alternative to replacing sensors.I understand at an attractive price ::)
