gyoung Posted November 13, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 13, 2014 The resurrection. .. By an 'entrepreneur'... Shopping there was not a nice experience when I tried it, they spent ages trying to sell me insurance at ever lower prices and I had to be very 'firm/rude' to shut the salesman up and escape with the goods. Peter H Posted November 13, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 13, 2014 Peter Jones. (Not the store, but the name of the new owner.) The new Jessop's that I've seen have been pretty much at the lower end of the market and with very a limited range of stock, but I hope this is a good sign. antigallican Posted November 15, 2014 Share #7 Posted November 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hmm. So type in London and the choice is RGLewis, Red Dot or Jessops. Is that a tough choice?
Peter H Posted November 15, 2014 Share #8 Posted November 15, 2014 Hmm. So type in London and the choice is RGLewis, Red Dot or Jessops. Is that a tough choice? Not everyone lives in London or buys Leicas. In many smaller towns around the country, Jessops is (or was until recently) the only surviving photographic shop and I'd rather see it succeed at what it does than fail because it doesn't specialise like Red Dot. Guest Posted November 16, 2014 Share #10 Posted November 16, 2014 Not everyone lives in London or buys Leicas. In many smaller towns around the country, Jessops is (or was until recently) the only surviving photographic shop and I'd rather see it succeed at what it does than fail because it doesn't specialise like Red Dot. Hopefully the journey will go full circle with Jessops. A good number of years ago the shops where staffed by knowledgable people who had a keen interest in the hobby. The flagship store in Leicester held a massive stock of equipment including Leica and other prestige makes. They also had a very good school of photography which was open on Saturdays.Where I think they went wrong was to start buying lots of existing businesses and from memory had a target of 250 shops in the UK.Personally I hope they do well and at least with Peter Jones at the helm they have a clever owner. Firefly Posted November 16, 2014 Share #11 Posted November 16, 2014 I remember Jessops Classic, in the same yard as The Classic Camera and York Cameras, got my first M from there which was a beater M2, all I could afford in those days. Jessops seemed to go off the boil when digital took over, went from looking like a proper camera shop (even had decent secondhand) to a department of PC World or similar, cheers Rob
