sblitz Posted November 5, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 5, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I can drive out to Leica NJ OR use Nippon Photoclinic in Manhattan. One is Leica, the other is Manhattan so my workday is less disrupted and the turnaround could be faster. Thoughts? Experience with Nippon Photoclinic? Advertisement Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Hi sblitz, Take a look here Vertical focus out of alignment on my M9 -- who to fix in NYC?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted November 5, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 5, 2014 You can even do it yourself, it is a simple adjustment.
sblitz Posted November 5, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted November 5, 2014 yes, thanks, and that was my first inclination. but finding the tool new seems problematic. Ebay sells them (where did these guys find them?) and not sure if the M9 uses a different tool or not.
AlanJW Posted November 7, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 7, 2014 yes, thanks, and that was my first inclination. but finding the tool new seems problematic. Ebay sells them (where did these guys find them?) and not sure if the M9 uses a different tool or not. If you are close enough to drive over to Leica NJ, they might be able to help you. A couple of years ago, I brought them an M9 with a sensor I couldn't clean and they were going to do it on the spot for me -- until they found it was flawed and need replacement. It is not that far from the NJ side of the GW Bridge.

A miller Posted November 11, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 11, 2014 Steve - DO NOT take your M9 to Nippon. Trust me. Do yourself a favor and just drive to NJ one morning. Get there by 7:30am and give it personally to Bill Weier, who is the head of service. If it is out of warranty it will be more expensive. But assuming you dont feel comfortable trying your hand at open heart surgery, i wouldnt muck around with anything else. I do the trek frequently for sensor cleanings and it is not so bad. Getting there is a breeze and coming back is a bit of a schlep due to traffic, although you should be able to get baxk to the City by 10am or so.

Ebay sells them (where did these guys find them?) and not sure if the M9 uses a different tool or not. You can make the tool yourself. Just grind a 2 mm screwdriver down leaving a little lip at one side. Don't forget to use a minuscule dollop of acetone to temporarily soften the locking glue.
A miller Posted November 11, 2014 Share #8 Posted November 11, 2014 Steve - are you 100% sure only a rangefinder alignment is needed??? If the camera suffered an impact, it is possible that the sensor was also displaced. I have had experience with this.
sblitz Posted November 11, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted November 11, 2014 Thanks all for your comments. My inclination was to do it myself, just my nature, but in the end decided to drive it over to Leica NJ (been there before and Adam is 100% correct, very easy drive out, back in the morning traffic is another story). Got there at 7am to meet with my buddy Bill Weier, really nice guy, professional, and a wealth of info. Turns out the sensor was misaligned and as was the focus on my 75mm summicron. Everything is at said place for a few weeks. I guess one advantage to being in NYC is the ease of getting to Leica NJ and seeing and getting to know people there. Bill told me they are expanding, perhaps doubling, their facility and adding technicians (a late career change for myself perhaps?). Interesting to note that the camera was in my Billingham bag with my M6 classic and M4 when the bag rolled off a night stand. The M4 and M6 emerged unscathed.Just saying Thanks again for all of your responses.
A miller Posted November 11, 2014 Share #10 Posted November 11, 2014 Steve - did Bill confirm that the repair would be covered free of charge under the "goodwill program"? This is what I would expect.
sblitz Posted November 11, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted November 11, 2014 nope, costing me $475. while i can quibble on the price, dropping it is my responsibility so I don't think this is something Leica in conscience should pay for. When my sensor was replaced last summer (and they did it in a couple of days because of my impending trip to Italy) they gave me a discount. The lens, however, is a another story and still under the passport program. From what i have read, they have fixed a lot worse for nothing. Will go to battle on that one if need be. A miller Posted November 11, 2014 Share #12 Posted November 11, 2014 Steve - my instinct would be the same as yours. But then when I read stories on this forum (in the M9 section) about M9 bodies that were accidentally dropped after 5 years of use and severely damaged and Leica repairing the damage for FREE under a "goodwill programme," I can help but to feel entitled to the same. After all, we all paid a small fortune for the camera and no one is any more special than the next. And it is also worth noting that Leica doesn't have a "goodwill programme" for all its digital bodies; there aint one for the MM, for example.
