Leitz Park

Today I visited the new Leica factory in Wetzlar with my family. I would like to congratulate on an amazing facility and recommend to everyone to make a trip if you are ever in the neighborhood.

There are four main parts to the facility:

1. Exhibition area, showing a changing selection of Leica photographer work

2. A view into the factory where you can see the workers putting the final touches to Leica lenses and cameras, along with interactive displays explaining what is happening

3. A series of very well presented display cabinets containing pretty much one of everything that Leica has ever released. For anyone who visited the old facility in Solms, the display is a lot more complete and contains both camera bodies and lenses.

4. The Leica store: a nice selection of everything that Leica is currently selling (unfortunately excluding the new stuff that was announced at Photokina - that will not arrive until November) including some Leitz Park 100 special edition souvenirs (USB sticks, SD cards with a logo etc). Customer services is also here.

There are also two refreshment possibilities - the Leitz Cafe, and the Casino restaurant, where we chose to eat, which doubles as the employee restaurant, and offers an excellent quality lunch.

The building itself is an impressive architectural design,, very white, and very minimalistic....

So now I know where all the profit they made when I bought my gear went, and I must say it is money well spent :)

Can you win a camera in a restaurant?

Kasino has in Germany two meanings: Club and Casino (Spielbank).

In the former prussian parts Kasino is/was also used as a synomym for a higher level canteen, with the social differentiation Kasino = white collar workers, Canteen = blue collar workers. It has a military origin. Kasino was in former times the club of the officiers.

It´s a heritage of the old Prussia - in southern Germany the name is mostly unknown.

Today, by globalisation the word Spielbank is offen displaced by Casino.

. Customer services is also here.

t :)

Thanks Simon for a nice update. A friend of mine and I will go to Wetzlar in the middle of October. One question - when you visit Leica, I know it is possible to leave your camera at customer service for a "drop-in" service - they adjust the rangefinder and clean the sensor for you and you get your camera back the next day. My question is - do you (or anyone else) know if this "fast-track" service cost anything or is it done as a matter of goodwill /free service/courtesy?

Thanks

/Anders

From other postings I have read on LUF, my understanding is that you pay around €180-200 for the fast track, at least if it is sent in via post, in addition to the normal coat for the service.

I was also there recently - on 22 Sep. Didn't realise that the Casino restaurant was open to all, rather than just employees, so I had instead to feast on the wonderful exhibits, and be satisfied with a coffee in Cafe Leitz.

A much better experience than was Solms.

Regards

Maybe :) put it this way - we didn't ask for permission, we just went in, bought our lunch, and ate it, and nobody stopped us :)
