JohanS Posted September 23, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 23, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm going to by my M in London and after a visit at Reddot I want to shop there. Since there are a lot of money involved I wonder how do you pay for the goods? Do you use credit card, cash or are there other ways to pay? Advertisement Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Hi JohanS, Take a look here How to pay when buying Leica in London. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted September 23, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 23, 2014 Serious question, Johan ? Take your best credit card, they should say "thank you" afterwards. Cash is a bad idea with all these crooks all over the place. And: welcome to the forum, good luck with your new LEICA. Best GEORG
JohanS Posted September 23, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted September 23, 2014 Thanks for your reply Georg! And yes, it's a serious question as a M with a few lenses quickly comes ut to between 15 an 20 k GBP. With this amount of money I think I need about three cards (two new ones) and that's a bit unpractical. I agree cash is bad! Could bank transfer be an option? DigitalHeMan Posted September 24, 2014 Share #4 Posted September 24, 2014 You could do a bank transfer but obviously would have to do it in advance so that the money is in the seller's account when you go to pick up the goods.
k-hawinkler Posted September 24, 2014 Share #5 Posted September 24, 2014 Why not ask the credit card issuer for a higher limit? Also, using a debit card should work, provided the money needed is in the account.
Jennifer Posted September 24, 2014 Share #6 Posted September 24, 2014 I used a credit card to buy my M240 and 35 FLE from "Red Dot" in April. IME buying isn't ever a problem, the end of month statement may, however, be an altogether other matter.
erl Posted September 24, 2014 Share #7 Posted September 24, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Simple. Decide what payment method(s) you have at your disposal and ask the vendor which they prefer.
masjah Posted September 24, 2014 Share #8 Posted September 24, 2014 I used my debit card. It was no skin off my nose really, since I always pay my credit card off completely every month, so the funds needed to be in my bank account anyway. That way, the dealer had much lower charges to pay. I thought it might be just a small way of helping an independent dealer who I like very much.
jaapv Posted September 24, 2014 Share #9 Posted September 24, 2014 You can transfer the required amount of money to your credit card beforehand and notify the CC company of the impending transaction. Equally you can ask your bank to remove the withdrawal limit it is there for security reasons) from your debit card temporarily.
stuny Posted September 24, 2014 Share #10 Posted September 24, 2014 Johan - Welcome to the Forum. One other thing to consider: The more credit cards you have, the lower the credit limit will be on the new cards, and possibly, when you renew your existing card, that credit limit might drop, too. The debit card idea mentioned above sounds like the best solution for you.
FrozenInTime Posted September 24, 2014 Share #11 Posted September 24, 2014 I used my debit card. BTW - never do this for mail order; you don't have the same protection as with a credit card. I had to to take a bicycle shop to small claims court to get money back following months of excuses/lies and non delivery on some hand built wheels.
andybarton Posted September 24, 2014 Share #12 Posted September 24, 2014 I don't know if it's the same in every jurisdiction but if you pay with a UK issued Credit Card and something goes wrong (say a vendor goes out of business and you don't get your goods), the credit card company is liable and you will get your money refunded. Lots of credit cards also offer 90 days insurance on purchases, which may or may not be helpful.

Yes, a point well worth re-stating; in the UK only use a debit card with dealers you trust, otherwise you don't have the protection under the Consumer Credit Act given by a credit card.
pedaes Posted September 24, 2014 Share #14 Posted September 24, 2014 I would ask Red Dot beforehand. If the cards are not issued by UK Bank, for the large sums involved they may not get through fraud/money laundering checks unless you have pre-arranged with card issuer. You also need to check they have everything and reserved for you. Red Dot are dealing with non UK residents all the time and have plenty of experience so are the best people to ask,
jaapv Posted September 24, 2014 Share #15 Posted September 24, 2014 With a dealer of Red Dot's standing you could even consider pre-paying by bank transfer.
JohanS Posted September 24, 2014 Author Share #16 Posted September 24, 2014 Thank you everybody for all your help and interest in my problem. With a dealer of Red Dot's standing you could even consider pre-paying by bank transfer. Bank transfer sounds interesting and would solve many of my problems. But can I trust Red Dot (for me this is a lot of money...)? Regards Johan
andybarton Posted September 24, 2014 Share #17 Posted September 24, 2014 I would have no qualms about transferring money to RedDot, but I'd still use my credit card in preference due to the other benefits.

andybarton Posted September 24, 2014 Share #20 Posted September 24, 2014 Do you have a credit card? Can you check how you are covered by them in the event of a disaster? (which won't happen) I don't buy a lot of Leica stuff compared to many people here, but if I do, I buy from Red Dot or my local dealer in the NW of England. I trust both of them to give me a good deal and great service and neither have ever let me down.
