Advertisement Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Hi andybarton, Take a look here Calumet to close all stores and website in US. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest tanks Posted March 13, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 13, 2014 Calumet Photo in the US Officially Declares Bankruptcy, Gave Employees Zero Notice This was one place nearby where I could rent equipment. Interesting that B&H still flourishes whereas others fail, so I don't think one can blame Amazon, cell phone cameras etc. in its entirety. Peter H Posted March 13, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 13, 2014 I went to Inverness yesterday and found that a new Jessops had opened in the High Street. Not my favourite shop, and hardly comparable wit Calumet, but there's something nice about a camera shop opening rather than closing. My guess is that they'll do OK during the mini-boom in which lots of DSLR users are swapping out in favour of small mirror-less systems, and then it'll all settle down again. wlaidlaw Posted March 13, 2014 Share #4 Posted March 13, 2014 Calumet USA have shut all their shops and entered chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Another professional photography supplier bites the dust. Wilson
sanyasi Posted March 13, 2014 Share #5 Posted March 13, 2014 Too bad. There were 2 stores w/I 3 miles of my house. Until a year ago, I frequented them, but in the last year inventory (paper, for example) was spotty. Now I don't have to feel guilty ordering over the web. If you know what paper or ink you want and pay attention to your supply, online is simpler.

Guest redge Posted March 13, 2014 Share #8 Posted March 13, 2014 (edited) Calumet has some explaining to do. They closed their US doors this morning with no notice to anyone, including staff and professionals who had rentals to pick up. They do a significant on-line business but as of at least 10:00 a.m. EDT this morning (when I checked), both their website and Twitter account had been taken down. People with pending orders must be freaking out. Edited March 13, 2014 by redge
Peter H Posted March 13, 2014 Share #9 Posted March 13, 2014 Some branches have been bought by Peter Jones This is true. What surprised me was that a new branch opened. Whilst the shop had a very small number of DSLRs, it was mainly full of small "system" cameras, Nikon, Fuji and Olympus dominating, but also half the shop devoted to compacts which I thought was a dead market. (Sorry to butt in on the calumet thread, but there's a relationship there somewhere!)
gyoung Posted March 14, 2014 Share #10 Posted March 14, 2014 Indeed, Calumet in the uk were trying to buy the Jacobs chain when that went last year. Gerry Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk

earleygallery Posted March 14, 2014 Share #12 Posted March 14, 2014 This is true. What surprised me was that a new branch opened. (Sorry to butt in on the calumet thread, but there's a relationship there somewhere!) I'm surprised they've opened a new Jessops. I did visit their store in Oxford Street before christmas when I was shopping for a new lens for my Canon and I wasn't impressed. The store looked the same, but with even less stock. A couple of sales assistants busy with customers but not paying any attention to other people in the store. Worse of all, prices that were higher than their competition. I walked out. I wondered what TV's Peter Jones would or could do to transform the business, but it is surely destined for failure again if they think it can simply carry on as before. Bill W Posted March 14, 2014 Share #13 Posted March 14, 2014 I feel sorry for the poor soul that left their camera for a sensor cleaning and were to pick it up yesterday. Of course I feel sorry for the employees as well.

Of course I feel sorry for the employees as well. This kind of scenario never happened to me. What does it mean? They won't be able to get their cameras back? What about the items they have in stock, and were not sold, will there be an auction for those?
rickp13 Posted March 14, 2014 Share #15 Posted March 14, 2014 FYI in germany, the 6 calument stores have just announced a 'spring festival of photography' with dates in march and april with all major suppliers present. they must have been planned before the u.s. action. earleygallery Posted March 14, 2014 Share #16 Posted March 14, 2014 This kind of scenario never happened to me. What does it mean? They won't be able to get their cameras back? What about the items they have in stock, and were not sold, will there be an auction for those? Suppliers usually have retention of title for goods supplied which means they can take them back if they are owed money. If you have ordered and paid for goods but not collected them you have probably lost your money, unless you paid by credit card and can claim against the card issuer. Gear in for repair will have to be returned to the owners, once the administrators have determined which items are not the company's property. That's how it usually works.

The link in the OP says "it's business as usual in UK and European stores" so they might not be affected by the crisis in US. We'll see...
Guest Mr. B Posted March 19, 2014 Share #18 Posted March 19, 2014 Calumet was my least favorite camera store I ever delt with. Sorry to hear of their demise though. Mr. B
Herr Barnack Posted March 19, 2014 Share #19 Posted March 19, 2014 Calumet has some explaining to do. They do a significant on-line business but as of at least 10:00 a.m. EDT this morning (when I checked), both their website and Twitter account had been taken down. People with pending orders must be freaking out. That is a crappy way of treating customers and clients. It seems like Calumet management was bitter over their bankruptcy and chose to go down the tubes with a final temper tantrum aimed at the people who they blame for their misfortune. A company that chooses to act in such a spiteful and childish manner reveals to the whole world the root cause for their demise: Out of control egos and crappy business practices.
