NotoriousSEG Posted March 7, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 7, 2014 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, I'm still pretty new here so forgive me if this has been discussed before. However, even if it has we might have new insights from a whole new set of people. Anyway, what I would like to learn about is how everyone carries their M. Half case? Leica grip? Naked? Before getting mine, I was pretty hell bent on taking the ball - case route. My thinking was that a half case would provide a measure of protection, a dash of style , and of course an increased grip. But now I'm not sure. The case, while doing all those things and adding a nice retro touch to boot, also takes a sleek piece of German industrial design and bulks it up, thus partially negating the reason I liked it in the first place. Lately I've been considering the Leica grip because I certainly am interested in a secure grip...but then am I losing protection? What to do , what to do... Tell me your experiences, particularly if you really use your camera. I tote one with me just about everywhere. EDIT: Tell me the rationale behind your choice. That might help me hash this out in my mind. Thanks! Edited March 7, 2014 by NotoriousSEG

Berth Posted March 7, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 7, 2014 My MP wears an Angelo Pelle half case. The Leica half case was too short, the front piece too narrow.
Mr_Jones Posted March 7, 2014 Share #4 Posted March 7, 2014 I'm liking the Leica half case, it protects the base from different surfaces. I tend to put it down on table tops etc. and some of them can be abrasive. I still prefer the naked look though. No matter what I do to protect my M's they always end up with some signs of wear, after I while I can relax and enjoy the camera without babying it. That's the best time for me, the photos get better when I stop thinking about the camera.
CheshireCat Posted March 7, 2014 Share #5 Posted March 7, 2014 Naked. I am not a pussy. Wear is normal for any tool.
lct Posted March 7, 2014 Share #6 Posted March 7, 2014 Never quite understood the rationale of half cases. We need a bag anyway don't we, so what's the point in carrying a bag + a half case? I prefer a little bag with 2 or 3 lenses, couple of batteries, cards, charger and a naked body. Matter of taste anyway... Scratches? Cherish them or buy a silver body and it'll look as new for ever.
luigi bertolotti Posted March 7, 2014 Share #7 Posted March 7, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bag for lenses & accessories , camera naked with neckstrap ; leather case only when environmental conditions make it advisable, otherwiise it simply means more time and hassle to be ready to shoot. Me too tend to consider half case a no useful device.
swamiji Posted March 7, 2014 Share #8 Posted March 7, 2014 The M240 is the first M that I use a half case. My M4/7/8/9/MM all naked. Two things happened, first the Leica half case got better with a grip built into the case, and secondly the M240 got heavier. So having a TU/grip/ hand grip became more important. Yes it adds to the weight, but it compensates for its self. Yes, it's slower changing batteries/SD cards, but with a little forethought, it's not a problem. The Leica case it's self is kind of ugly. Gray, with white stitching, but with a black marker and a careful use of black shoe polish, it turned out quite nice. Sorry about the poor iPhone photo... Welcome, dear visitor! Mr_Jones Posted March 7, 2014 Share #9 Posted March 7, 2014 The grey case seems to suit the silver body better. Nice custom job on your half case there.
pragmatist Posted March 7, 2014 Share #10 Posted March 7, 2014 Use a quality leather wrist strap, no chance of dropping it and you still get the feel of the Leicas gorgeous lines. Luigi from Leicatime is an Italian chappie who makes some gorgeous straps.
viramati Posted March 7, 2014 Share #11 Posted March 7, 2014 Naked with standard grip and soft release button. For me any sort of case just makes the camera bigger and gets in the way
jdsheepdog Posted March 7, 2014 Share #12 Posted March 7, 2014 Brand new silver M, Luigi half case with bottom flap and detachable back, Luigi Leicatime bottom plate with a battery and card flap. The thing that drove me craziest when had my M8 was having to take it out of the case every time I had to charge the battery. I must be the only person who actually likes the Leica strap, it is strong, light, and the pad clings to my shoulder well. My M3 is also in a Luigi case, I love 'em, serious camera porn
earleygallery Posted March 7, 2014 Share #13 Posted March 7, 2014 Spend the money that you might spend on a case, on a hand held light meter instead, and use the camera as is.
mwilliamsphotography Posted March 7, 2014 Share #14 Posted March 7, 2014 Nude as the day it was born. The only accessory I've added to my M Monochrom is a Thumbs Up because it almost always has a M50/0.95 Noctilux mounted on it. However, I do use a very large Micro-Cloth swaddling in the bag … my experience has been that any wear usually happens from years of taking the camera in and out of the camera bag. - Marc
keithlaban.co.uk Posted March 7, 2014 Share #15 Posted March 7, 2014 M9-P = Thumbs Up, wrist strap and lashings of black tape. M = l-bracket, stick on bump for focus button and more lashings of black tape.
Londonmember Posted March 7, 2014 Share #16 Posted March 7, 2014 I have Leica half cases on both my M and Monochrom. It started a few months ago with the MM when I tried one and realised I could grip the camera better with the case and ditch the thumbs up I had been using. I like to hold the camera in one hand with the strap wrapped around my wrist. Feels less obtrusive.

flyalf Posted March 7, 2014 Share #18 Posted March 7, 2014 Naked but with the M9 strap. Have removed the plastic from strap since this was just an obstacle. Acts as neck an wrist strap.
ninicholas Posted March 7, 2014 Share #19 Posted March 7, 2014 naked and without strap, I'm using a small sling bag with A&A double compartments, one for M240 and another for MP with lenses only, i just pull it out to shoot and drop it back like cowboy style. Bill W Posted March 7, 2014 Share #20 Posted March 7, 2014 I do not own any cases, I use a small bag for camera and a couple of lens. I have never owned the accessory grip. To me it just makes a relatuvely small camera big. I never use a thumbs up or soft release. I guess I just use it as it came out of the box with the included strap. I have been thinking about another strap though...
