21mm vs. 24mm Elmarit ASPH....

I had a 21ASPH but, after using it for a while, exchanged it for a 24ASPH.

The 21 is a fine lens, but I find the results from the 24 are superior. That's a very subjective view, and not based on exhaustive tests, but it was my very clear view.

Erwin Puts has tested both, but I don't think he's done a direct comparison. Of the 24 he says, "The Elmarit-M 24mm is without any doubt a masterpiece of optical engineering and within the Leica M range a landmark design...No Leica M user should be without this lens. The M style of photography demands intimate close range photography and the 24 is one of the best lenses to explore this area. It delivers unsurpassable quality in the 24 focal length."

Let me know if anyone has a 24//2.8 and wants to trade it for a 21/2.8. I have a LNIB chrome 21/2.8 that's less than six months old that I was using until my WATE arrived.

You might get a little distortion on the edges of the 21 compared to the 24, but the 21 is certainly an excellent performer.

The Leica 21mm ASPH-M is a fantastic lens! I have been using it in many situations during photojournalism or other photographic subjects and produced some dramatic photo images; I use it with extremely low shutter speeds hand-held in low light situations at f2.8 to have great photo images on slide films.

Before the 21mm ASPH-M, I had used the previous 21mm M lens also with great results. Some 21mm M lens images can be found in my small photo-website, though most images are in slides and can only be viewed by projection or in large prints during exhibitions.

Below image was taken with a Leica M & a 21mm ASPH lens, at f2.8 about 1/4s or 1/8s, 100ASA slide film, hand-held; the only lighting was from the little entrance door behind, and from a small hole on the top of the yurt that's for smoke to go out...; Again there is no comparison between viewing it on a computer screen vs actual slide-projection of this image.

Phantastic photos on your web side, some of them should be published at the Leica Magazine !

The 24mm is extremely good and my personal favorite between the two focal lengths. I got a Bessa R4A to use with it and the combination is great. That camera will also take a 21 with parallax correction in the VF. I sold my 21 and replaced it with a 15mm which I use much less but more effectively. For some reason the 21mm focal length just didn't suit me. I wouldn't change lenses on the basis of perceived optical quality but more on the basis of which focal length better suits the situations you want to portray.
