Astronomy use with Leica 82

I have just obtained a Leica 82 televid which I wish to use for nature/bird watching etc.

My major hobby is Astronomy and I would also like to use the scope for viewing at night.

The supplied zoom lens will give up to 50 power but I would like to attach other eyepieces I have to the 82. This will enable me to use higher magnifications which is necessary at times. What I need is an adapter that will screw onto the thread visible when I take the leica zoom off.

Is there anyrthing available for this? Also, what is the thread that is on the back of the scope. It is not the normal m39 because it is at least 42mm diameter. Is it an m42 thread?

Hoping someone can help?

Thanks

John

John -

Hopefully somebody here will be able to help you, but our passion is photography, so perhaps not. All I do know is that our member Albert form St. Paul, MN uses a Leica sope along with an attachment to marry his D-Lux Lecia camera to the scope for extreme telephoto images.

John, I had been selling the Sport-Optic line from Leica and at that time, I was and am not aware of another eyepiece for that 'scope' that would increase the magnification. Too, remember any magnification increase will affect the field of view (obviously) and darken the light gathering.

The best way to approach a source for your needs is call the closest Leica office and talk to a technician familiar with the scope, you can locate them through the Leica Camera web page. Be very careful with any after market eyepieces - if any - making sure that the quality will match up and that the threads are nicely machined, but definitely check with Leica first. Another idea would be to contact a local astronomy club, they have some pretty wild optics and may have some ideas as well. Best of luck.

For observing through the atmosphere, it is really the atmosphere that sets the limit on definition. Your Leica 82 is a great instrument for observing ground based objects but the resolution is overkill for astronomy and increasing the magnification will not assist you. Most ground based astronomy is conducted with reflecting scopes for the simple reason that what is really important is light gathering ability rather than resolution. I would use the money that you might spend for an eyepiece and purchase the largest reflector that you can or just use your 82 as is. A higher magnification eyepiece will not help you but a scope with more light gathering ability will.-Dick

Thankyou for the replies so far.

As I say originally my major hobby is Astronomy and has been for over 50 years now so I am aware of most things astronomical.

I already have five astronomical scopes of various types but having the leica now does open up its possible dual use when I go away from home which is the reason for the technical side of my post re thread sizes etc.

I am grateful for the info so far and I have done some research based on this which could bear fruit.

If anyone has some info re the thread size questions I would be grateful

John
