Default A Curiosity?

A little while back, I got a s/h series 63 drop-in UV filter for my Hasselblad wide-angle lenses. These old "C" lenses take filters which drop into a recess in the front of the lens, and are then held in place by a threaded ring which screws into what you would think would be the filter thread. Anyhow, I was surprised to see that my nice new (old) filter was proudly engraved around the rim with the noble script "Leitz Wetzlar". How odd. Did Leica make filters for Hasselblad at one time? Or are there some Leica lenses which use these drop-in filters?

Best regards

John

Leica used the same kind of system, so I'm assuming that it just happens to be the same size as for one of the Leica R lenses.

I don't think Leica ever made filters for Hasselblad - indeed I don't think Leica actually make the filters either (they are made and branded for them).

Aha

so there are some R-series lenses which use this system, are there? This might be a handy thing to know, as the Hasselblad filters are hard to find.

PS James you are brilliant, your clue has helped me solve the mystery. The filter is a Leitz Series 8 UVa, and there is a whole range of Leica series 8 filters which will work just fine on the 'Blad wide-angles, including the early SWC. As these Hasselblad filters are getting scarce and expensive, this is good news. So what Leica lens are they intended for?

John

Hi John , only one of my R lenses has a filter draw its the Apo Telyt 280 f4. Too small to be of use for other lenses at the front.

John,

Not brilliant, I just have a older style 35mm Summicron R which uses series filters (although I don't actually have any). The polariser would be good though because its held in place by the lens hood which has a little wheel that rotates the filter! The lens needs a CLA so when I get that done I'll treat it to the pola.

I'm not sure which lenses use series 8 filters, I'm sure someone else will advise.

Are the "Series" series of filters still made?

They are still listed in the B+W catalogue.

The Minolta-derived f2.8 Elmarit-R 24mm uses series 8 filters, held in place by the lens hood - I used one for several years before buying the 21-35mm Vario-Elmarit.

They also fit the old 180mm f2.8 elmarit-R (which I use them for), and possibly the old 250mm as well.
