Goombah6 Posted August 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I purchased a 40mm Summicron - C for use on my M8 earlier this year. I love how compact the lense is, and don't mind the mismatched frame lines. One thing I'm finding is that this lense seems very prone to lense flare. Unfortunately, I do not have the rubber hood that normally came with this lense. I have affixed a P & J UVIR filter. My question for anyone who might be able to help: Is my lense flare caused by lack of proper hood, or am I using a cheap UVIR filter that is making things worse...or is the design of this lense such that it is just going to be more prone to this kind of thing. I don't have this problem at all with my CV 35mm 1.2, and I do not use a hood with that lense. Interested in your thoughts on this. Thanks! ---Dave
Advertisement Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Hi Goombah6, Take a look here Summicron C 40mm and Lense Flare. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Xmas Posted August 1, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 1, 2010 Hi It needs to be gin clear when you shine a flash light through it in a dark room and look at each surface from the other direction. Pro strip and clean if any sign of faint fog... Your CV lens is multi coated, the cron single coated, if you look at the 35mm or 40mm CV f1.4 you can get either single coated or multi coated, the SC flares more but pastels the colours. The SC will need a hood more. Ditto your SC cron. Lotsa people like the SC little cron. The IR filters dont help shoot outside without one. lct Posted August 1, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 1, 2010 If you refer to ghost images, they come probably from the filter. Otherwise wide Summicrons did flare more than current ones 30/40 years ago (here compared to the then Summicron 50). The Summilux 35 from this period is even worse in that respect. lct Posted August 3, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 3, 2010 I was using a 50w halogen then. Must be 4 or 5 years ago. Tried the new LED version since then but i don't like it at all so i'll order a new old 50w again i'm afraid. Oh well for my grand children they will never thank me enough for the taxes i pay for them anyway.

frank_dernie Posted August 7, 2010 Share #10 Posted August 7, 2010 Sorry LCT I was talking about the wasteful e's the OP keeps adding to the word lens Apparently with an e is an alternative correct spelling. I am acquainted with a very pedantic chap who, when criticised for spelling it thus, quoted dictionaries etc and has made a point in spelling it with an e on all the photography lists he frequents ever since, probably for 10 to 15 years now. cheers, Frank PS no I haven't bothered to check a dictionary recently myself :-)
