Default York Minster

Just in case you haven't seen the reports in the press, York Minster has had all the seating removed for the next few weeks, precisely to give people the opportunity to get a feeling for the sheer "space" of the place. Great photo opportunity for those (like me) who like this sort of thing.

Hello John,

What a nice story. I wish I lived closer.

Actually it reminds me of the debate I once had in the tourist office in Guildford. To mark the "Heritage Weekend" on which so many buildings usually closed are open to the public, they arranged for a big banner to be hung across the width of the High Street totally ruining any middle- or long-distance view of the historic street and some of it's best features including the clock.

When I pointed out that on that particular weekend it was a good chance that more people than usual would be in the town and wanting to take pictures that did not feature said bloody great banner I was met with a blank stare and the response "why?"

Aargh.

Regards,

Bill

Bill

It makes one weep - it really does!

I was at York today (only an hour on the train for me, and with a cheapo railcard!). The overall impression is breathtaking. I did post some monochrome images of the place on the Old Forum a while ago, but I thought I'd try some colour, which is always harder because of the mixed daylight and supporting tungsten lighting - colour balance a bit of a nightmare.

Anyway the PC 28/2.8 was working overtime, as was the 180/2.8 Apo + 2X Apo Extender, doing details such as the ceiling bosses.

Really nice day out! (Early retirement strongly recommended.)
