Default Eric and James Ravilious Exhibition

For any forum members who might end up in the vicinity of Eastbourne, Sussex, UK, may I encourage you to go and look at the Exhibition of the works of Eric and James Ravilious at the Towner Gallery.
Eastbourne Borough Council - Exhibitions - Exhibitions
3 July to 5 September.

The son James was (he as well as his father, is no longer with us) a keen Leica user, with M4 and M6 cameras. His Sussex landscapes have a lovely dreamy quality. I met him a number of years ago at the house of my wife's godfather - another Leica enthusiast.

The father Eric, was one of the best known landscape artists between the wars, painting in an "art deco" style, which I love. I would be very keen to have one but I should have bought some years ago, as his works now fetch huge prices.

Snapshot of James' work below.

Who, like me, knows exactly how those milk churns sound as they knock together? "Dohng!" wasn't it? Takes me back to early sixties Dorset.

I have been to several James Ravilious exhibitions and have met his wife, a truly charming woman. His work is inspirational.

There's also a book with good quality duotone repros: see The Bardwell Press - An English Eye (with documentary film).

If you like Ravillious - and who with a love of people or landscape photography wouldn't - you may be interested in this 30 minute film on YouTube - it's the documentary that was shown on UK TV a while ago...

He also took the photographs for this book.

Down the Deep Lanes: Peter Beacham, James Ravilious

If I could take just one photograph in my life as good as the anything done by James Ravilious, I would die a happy man. I told his wife that, btw.

AFAIAC, Ravilious is my ultimate Leica shooter. No one else.

All,

I will be in the UK next week on business with some down time on Saturday. I'll be staying out close to Heathrow. Can anyone tell me how close to Heathrow this exhibition might be and if I it would be relatively easy to get too on public transport. Sorry, not brave enough to drive on the English side of the road.

Thanks a bunch,

And mentioned this on my blog as well.

Larry, it's not the closest (about 70 miles as the crow flies) but public transport from Heathrow isn't too bad. The simplest is

1) National Express coach from Heathrow Airport to Gatwick Airport (South Terminal). Frequent departures, journey time usually 60 to 90 minutes.

2) Train from Gatwick (the station is in the airport terminal) to Eastbourne. Trains every half hour, journey time about 60 minutes. From Lewes onwards the train passes through some of the landscapes that Ravilious senior painted.

From Eastbourne station the Towner Gallery is an easy walk or a short taxi ride. I'd be happy to visit the gallery with you (I live just outside the town) but have other engagements all that day.

Chris,

When I was very small in the late 1940's, we used to put two small milk churns (1 pint) and a very small one (1/3 pint maybe) outside our front door to be filled with milk and cream from the horse drawn cart, which had big churns. I would describe the sound as "clongggg". I was very disappointed when they replaced the cart with a truck/milk bottles in about 1950, as you could not feed the truck with the squishy apples from our loft and get left with a slobbery hand.

I also admire his work..last year I purchased a couple of his prints, through his wife, and they are now mounted and hanging on my home office wall.

Every time I look at them it takes me back.

The print quality and the mood is just wonderful.

The next time I am back home in the UK for more than a day is mid-August and I hope to be allowed enough time off from organising my wife's 60th birthday party to go and see the exhibition, which is only about 45 minutes away.

John,

Thanks a bunch for the detail. I think I have enough time to make the trip, at least I'm hopeful I will be able to do so. Coming back at the beginning of August so I might be able to factor this into that trip.

Again, thanks for the help. It's very much appreciated.
