Black-tape Leica M3 - Time magazine camera of the year?...

I noticed yesterday the current Australian edition of Time magazine (December 18, 2006 / No. 50) has a black-tape covered M3 on its cover:

... used to illustrate their "2006: The Best Photos of the Year" round-up:

Although the battle-scared M3 sure looks the part, I can't help wondering about the shots themselves, which would have all been taken using various forms of non-Leica DSLR.

But then again, I guess a "pool-loaner" Canon EOS on the cover just wouldn't have the same kind of recognition & nostalgia value, right?...

... FWIW I find the web slide-show to be better quality than the magazine reproductions (!) A hint of things to come?...

Andrew, today I noticed the UK edition of the magazine in the Smith's chain of booksellers had the same image on the cover. I found it quite eyecatching. As you say though, it doesn't have much relevance to the contents.
