Thanks Ivan and Pete - its Elvetham Hall in Hampshire. An early Victorian mansion - now an upmarket hotel - where I was staying on business last week. A lot of these places have been spoiled but this is owned by a family who are proud of the history of the place and have not "developed" it in a way which looses its character

Well - not quite Attic but I am shortly looking forward to having a "purple-stained mouth" with the vintage of the land of one Azzo of illustrious repute!

Did not Kipling have something to say about the Maltese Cat?
It's going to be a trifle crowded on the little rock with all you snappers there- watch out for sand-flies.

Keith -- this mention of Elvetham Hall caught my attention because it was designed by the architect S S Teulon. I often used to pass it on the M3 driving between London and Southampton, and meant to stop one time and take a look at, but never did it. Teulon was a hero of a fellow student (this is many years ago), I recall, who was very keen on Victorian buildings, and I think went on to become a prominent figure in the Victorian Society. Teulon was also the architect of St Stephen's church in Hampstead, close to where I live, currently being restored at huge expense. His buildings are very distinctive. Rgds, John

I now recall that the student who was very interested in Victorian architecture was Gavin Stamp. Rgds, John
