Here's a quick and dirty run through, using Photoshop CS3
Here's the image I want to upload. Picture 8.jpg It's too large for the forum software, so I need to reduce it in size Picture 13.jpg The box shows the current size of the image, in pixels Picture 14.jpg I want to change it to 800 max height (or 960 wide if it's landscape) Picture 15.jpg So, this shrinks down the image to the right size (note that Photoshop retains the zoom when the image is reduced in dimension - it will be larger than this when displayed) Picture 16.jpg Next we want to Save As and in the right location on your Hard Drive) Note also that the image has already been assigned the sRGB profile so that it displays properly on non colour managed browsers, such as Internet Explorer Picture 17.jpg I will save this one in my "2008 jpgs" folder, and give it an appropriate name Picture 18.jpg The next box shows the size in kb of the file, for a given jpg quality. Knock back the quality slider until the kb size is as close to, but not over, 240kb Picture 19.jpg Job done. You can now upload the finished article to your post. Like this. Heswall REd Boat.jpg Hope this helps.

I have created a video of this procedure.
www.andybarton.com/resize.mov If this is helpful, I will also do one to show how to embed more than one image in a post.

This Mod goes through great lengths for this Forum.
Andy, Thank you.

Andy,
Great work! A useful video, and elegantly presented. I am partial to the Save for Web option in place of Save As. With save for web, I can enter in the desired file size, and hit the forum max of 241.1kb on the nose. I only wish that when the save for web command is included in an action, that it saved the output size, i.e. 241.1kb; currently it saves the quality setting used to achieve that size of the photo that you were working with when you created the action. This means that subsequent photos run through the action are either greater or lesser than 241.1kb. |

Yes, I'm afraid that I was exceeding my webhosting space
I will redo the video and upload again, now that I have more space
