philipus Posted July 9, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know Flickr works but which other sites work? I should add that I have searched but not found this info. Thank you philip
Advertisement Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Hi philipus, Take a look here From which images hosts does the forum allow embedding of images?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted July 9, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 9, 2014 500px? iPernity? Your own website?
philipus Posted July 10, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted July 10, 2014 Thank you Andy. Unfortunately images from my own site don't work, but just show up as links (and I'm linking to the image address directly). The reason for my question is that sometimes I don't want to upload images to my Flickr in order to link to embed them. At other fora postimg.org works but not here. Perhaps there are other such sites that work? cheers philip
pop Posted July 10, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 10, 2014 You could consider uploading your pictures to the forum.
philipus Posted July 10, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted July 10, 2014 Thank you Philipp, yes I have done that on occasion but I find that it doesn't work as well because the images become smaller. cheers philip
andybarton Posted July 10, 2014 Share #6 Posted July 10, 2014 My mistake - I misread the title of the thread. Apologies. Images uploaded here can be up to 1024 pixels on the longest edge - more than enough for most situations.
pop Posted July 10, 2014 Share #7 Posted July 10, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) We also ask our members to keep to those limits for pictures linked from external sites. This is on account of our members with slow or expensive connections to the internet.
philipus Posted July 10, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted July 10, 2014 I agree, that is important and the permitted size is definitely big enough for posting in the forum. I see now that attached images will show as the size they are. Has this changed? I seem to remember attached images were much smaller than their actual size. That's why I haven't used this function. And I now notice that one can include attached images inline (i.e. without the attachment frame showing) in the post by using the ATTACH tags, like below. I didn't know this. andybarton Posted July 10, 2014 Share #9 Posted July 10, 2014 You have always been able to show uploaded images this way. (Well, at least the last 8 years )
philipus Posted July 10, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted July 10, 2014 Thanks Andy. The day has not been wasted (and it's not even noon) as I have learnt something new today cheers philip
pop Posted July 10, 2014 Share #11 Posted July 10, 2014 Two things have changed in the last few years. The forum used to shrink images which did not conform to the limits. It now just refuses to upload the image. The limits have been adjusted. You now can upload larger pictures.

You don't have to believe me. Hard cases make bad law The allowable dimensions could be increased without increasing the allowable file size. jaapv Posted July 11, 2014 Share #15 Posted July 11, 2014 It's 2014 Which means that there are a not inconsiderable number of people on Inmarsat or Globalstar, etc, not to mention Iridium, meaning slow, long latency and above all, expensive. Thanks again for all the replies and as I said for teaching me something new about how to use the forum. I don't personally find the image dimension and size restrictions limiting for the purposes of the forum. I would be rather surprised, however, and I'm sure the administrator could clarify as necessary, if the fact that there are internet users, and even forum members, across the globe on satellite and similar connections would have had any impact at all on the decision regarding permitted image size and ditto dimensions. My guess is this had more/only to do with predominantly used/available screen resolutions and, for uploaded images, server, connection and storage burdens. It is my understanding that this is, indeed, the case. You don't have to look as far as the South Pole, either, to find people with slow or expensive connections, or both. As a matter of course, there is an increasing number of people accessing the forum through mobile devices where both bandwidth and quotas are a bit of an issue as well. Not inconsiderable is somewhat vague. Do you have any facts you can share? Is it known what proportion of this site’s visitors use these connection methods? jaapv Posted July 12, 2014 Share #19 Posted July 12, 2014 (edited) The exact number is irrelevant. We aim to keep the site accessible to everybody. The point is that large areas of the world are not like Western Europe, parts of the USA or Eastern Asia with universal access to high-speed Internet and 4G. To get back to the original question: Here is the relevant thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/about-leica-forum/174303-new-rule-about-linking-external-images.html#post1658432 Edited July 12, 2014 by jaapv
