Hello everyone

I have an ad placed at the Buy & Sell section of the forum for a Leica M6

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/market/listing/11922/Leica_M6_TTL.html

Some days ago, I got an e-mail from a guy named "Brian Morris" asking me to buy my camera. We exchanged a lot of emails and he told me he wants the camera as a present for his father ... We finally arranged everything, the payment was going to be made via Paypal

and then I received this email from Brian Morris:

---

I have made the payments and PayPal emailed me confirming check your

spam/junk folder as I sometimes get PayPal notification there,PayPal

said that they holding the money I sent because of the excess payment

that I made which was the money for pick up Agent,I will need you to

send the €550 to the courier agent so that they can be able to book a

pick up time with you in time and PayPal will put the money through

and you are credited with €1,650 do send the €550 through western

union transfer, you can find a western union agent in almost around you

or you can do it online too,I added €50 to cover the western union

charges to send the €550 after you have send the money get back to me

with the western union details, the mtcn number which you will be

given by western union after you have sent the money as well as the

sender's name and address or you can email it to PayPal directly.

Here is the courier agent's infor that you will need to send the money

to through western union transfer:

ACCOUNTANT NAME: Patricia James

ADDRESS: 76 Jacqueline Dr,

Bristol, CT, 06010,USA

I will need the details of the transfer once you have sent fund .

1.The MTCN number that is the 10 digits number on the western union receipt

2.Sender's name and address used in sending the money

3.Actual amount sent.

I will need the address where the camera will be picked up,As my pick

up agent will contact you to book a pick up time after they have

received payments but they will have to book a time that is convenient

for you, hope this is clear and understand ?

---

I suspected something was wrong, but I received two e-mails pretending to be from the PayPal service (same logo, same text) saying that my account has been charged with the amount but in order to receive it I have to make a Western Union payment to some 'Patricia James'

I e-mailed the Paypal spoof service and I found out that it was a fraud.

So I publish this here for the other members ... Be careful of scamming!

Paypal will never ask you to make a Western Union payment

That well-known crook is too lazy to even change his phoney name. Good for you for being so astute.

This is a pretty common one. The "buyer" will be working on an oil rig (in the case of the one I had,) and had to appoint an agent to pick up the merchandise, whom had to be paid. He had sent he full price, plus some, and the "agents fee."

All I had to do was pay the agent through Western Union etc.

The pickup was through a Yacht Club news letter a that I had placed with my email address.

I asked him if he might actually be a Nigerian Princess, and then heard no more.

He, or more likely they, probably use software that trawls for email addresses in "For Sale" advertisements.

Warning! The scammer is active again! He offered to buy a lens off me and collect by courier...

Note that he may even pay you by pay-pal and then file a dispute, claiming you never sent the goods, backed up by the "Courier"of course.
