farnz Posted March 15, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) As a sponsoring member one of the main benefits to me is the ability to turn off advertising content and in particular those irritating sidebar adverts that continually flash in lurid colours to continually distract the eye towards them. I've noticed that lately some members are using avatars that are in gif (graphical information file) format that allows them to roll through a selection of pictures at their chosen speed. This is continually irritating and distracting on an otherwise 'quiet' webpage especially when the rolling rate is quite fast and I'm unable to turn them off or freeze them. Would other members support disabling the ability to use animated gifs as avatars or at least limiting their use to reduce their ability to distract? Advertisement Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Hi farnz, Take a look here Flashing and rolling GIF Avatars. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bill Posted March 15, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 15, 2014 Yes. They are the visual equivalent of constantly jumping up and down shouting ME!ME!ME!ME! Sent from my C6833 using Tapatalk
pop Posted March 21, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 21, 2014 I agree that the flashing pictures are quite distracting and, hence, annoying. However, the members who use those are not usually aware of the issues they create. In my experience they replace their avatars readily enough if asked, all without any angry words being exchanged. May I suggest that you report posts which have that or other annoying properties? We usually manage to arrive at an optimal solution (which is the one we propose, of course).

LUF Admin Posted September 25, 2014 Share #6 Posted September 25, 2014 Would you very kindly explain how to do that please, Jaap? I think was a suggestion in my direction I can try to disable GIFs as avatar. But I'd prefer pop's approach - please let us know whose avatars annoy you. farnz Posted September 25, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted September 25, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Andreas, There were 2 or 3 at the time but I followed Pop's suggestion and I tactfully asked them to disable the flashing to which they gracefully complied. tobey bilek Posted December 6, 2014 Share #8 Posted December 6, 2014 Being crabby by nature, I turn off any website that irritates me. Television commercials are 99% muted. The advertisers come up with one irritating feature after another over the decades, extra loud ( now illegal, but they just modulate bumping the high limit now), flashing flashing images, stuff spinning around, and the latest is loud "background music". The same background music is creeping into regular programing to the point where the actors can not be understood. Nothing wrong with my hearing or sight either. So I take note of those shows and never return. It is like vote with remote. If you flash me or play a movie clip I did not opt for, or get into music over voice, it is just good by inside of 2 sec.. I warned you I was crabby.
