Default Body Serial # on Hotshoe

Why do Leica engrave the body serial numbers on the hotshoes for the M5 and M6 instead on the top plates of the earlier M2 - 4 series? Cost-saving feature? The current MPs now have them on the top plates but they do not seem to have the same aesthetics. Consider me an old traditionalist but the best-looking engraved top plates from the 60s' and 70s' are hard to beat.

Agree completely.. and not only for the positoning of the s/n... the Leica script old style, engraved on the top of classic Ms, is a little masterpiece I personally miss... to keep it "alive" even for instance in a smaller dimension, had been fine.
