Ladies and gentlemen - I actually
have an M7 and the M8.2 I have done three non-scientific but to me compelling tests.
Test One involves actuating the shutter on both (8.2 in discreet mode) and listening. The sound of the shutter actuation on the 8.2 is, to my ears, quieter than the sound of the M7. The sound of the re-cock on the M8.2 is actually comparable (in terms of potential annoyance to others in a quiet place) to winding on the film in the M7.
Test Two - my partner stands at 3 meters and does the same thing with me playing at "subject". Again - in a completely quiet interior I can hear both clicks, but for me the M8.2 (in discreet) is quieter.
Test Three - same scenario as Two, but with the M8.2 in normal mode. This time the shutter actuation + immediate re-cock is more noticable than the M7 shutter actuation.
The obvious DRF technique for quiet spaces for me now is
a) use the 8.2 in discreet,
b) re-cock with the camera tucked inside your jacket (as I used to do when doing a one-handed wind on with the M7 in concert settings).
The shots here (
Tord Gustavsen Trio) were taken in the Purcell Rooms during a live concert with an M7 + 137 apol telyt. They were eventually used on Gustavsen's next CD
Tord Gustavsen Trio - follow the link to Press kits / High resolution press photos. For the last two years I've known I
couldn't do this kind of work with the M8. Now I know I can - but I'm afraid only with the M8.2.
That's the end of the argument for me.
Best...
