Another option you could check out is the 28/2.8 hexanon.
Awesome build quality and a very nice performer. I've seen it compared to the 28 pre-asph elmarit.
They run around $600 or so.
As someone mentioned, the Canon 28/2.8 is a pretty neat option also. One of the smallest lenses you'll ever see for a RF. May not be the best if you want to do color or need to use it wide open. They can be tough to find, also.
