Cargo pants may or may not be in style, but I love the velcro seal pockets. Having a IIIa with a 35 or 50 lens in a lower leg pocket as well as another lens or two, film, viewfinder, light meter and whatever in other pockets works for me. It sure beats getting teased by my daughters for carrying around a man-purse.
I have been known to use socks or little tote bags for padding. The tote bags were ones I found laying around over the years.

My knitting freak daughter is making me some drawstring pouches. I did tell her they need to be lined. We'll see how that goes.
