Erik Gunst Lund Posted August 18, 2011 Share #41 Posted August 18, 2011 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) NikonGear.com has a forum dedicated to UV and IR, a lot of information regarding filters and lenses etc. can be found there. Not much info on Leica M8 IR there yet, but many other brands and very helpfull specialists!I have just got my IR filter for my M8 and will compare it to my D200 IR modifyed camera. A quick first test reveals a 5 stop difference between my M8 with B&W 92 and My Nikon D200 with Lifepixel standard internal IR filter... jaapv Posted August 21, 2011 Share #42 Posted August 21, 2011 Hard to compare these results with the different color treatment. 5 stops sounds about right, that is the difference I get between a 092 filtered M9 and an unfiltered one.
Erik Gunst Lund Posted August 23, 2011 Share #43 Posted August 23, 2011 Thanks for noting your findings on the 5 stop difference! Both images received the same PP; a 'click white' then converted to a medium size JPG The difference in 'IR-color' is due to the differences in the filters external filter on the M8 and internal filter of the D200 and the difference in sensor/internal RAW file camera processing. I will be on a field trip to Lofoten in a weeks time, where I will hopefully have plenty of time for making some nice IR captures and learn more about the M8's IR capabilities... jevidon Posted January 14, 2013 Share #44 Posted January 14, 2013 Hard to compare these results with the different color treatment. 5 stops sounds about right, that is the difference I get between a 092 filtered M9 and an unfiltered one. You said that you use an 092 filter with the M9. Does the M9 also have the very weak AA filter as does my M8? I understood that the M9 does not require the UV-IR filter as on the M8 which led me to believe that they strengthened the AA filter which I would think would block IR. I may be missing something, so could you explain?
jaapv Posted January 15, 2013 Share #45 Posted January 15, 2013 The IR filter on the M8 is 50%, on the M9 80%.
jevidon Posted January 15, 2013 Share #46 Posted January 15, 2013 The IR filter on the M8 is 50%, on the M9 80%. Then I would expect that IR photography would be more effective with the M8? What is your experience?
jaapv Posted January 15, 2013 Share #47 Posted January 15, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is equally effective, but takes far longer exposure on the M9.
msendin Posted June 12, 2013 Share #48 Posted June 12, 2013 With the M8 you can very easily take hand-held photos, even on cloudy days. You can improvise with IR just carrying a filter, no need to have a tripod always with you. This photo was taken on a sunny day with the M8 - Voigtlander 15mm - 1/125 sg, f:4,5 - ISO 160 - 720nm filter To do the same with the M9 I imagine you need to use high ISO, and grain with IR is a problem so low ISO are best. tobey bilek Posted June 12, 2013 Share #49 Posted June 12, 2013 Older lenses work at 5.6 correction quite well. The newer ones are all different. I had to take each one and focus bracket to find the correct point. I then marked it red.
