The camera has some very nice features at any price point (e.g., 3", 921,000 pixel LCD monitor). Personally, I really don't like the appearance of the camera, but I could get over that if the ergonomics worked well. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out in the digital MF market. The new Mamiya MF has the same sized sensor and costs double. Other features which I find unusual in a camera of this type: 1. HDR recording (this with a 40 mpixel sensor). 2. Custom image function. Dial in your presets. (reversal film preset). 3. CA reduction in camera. All in all on paper this seems to be quite a camera. rosuna Posted March 10, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 10, 2010 This is not a camera for "Pro" users. Pentax hasn't, and will not develop, a distribution and assistance system for professionals. This camera shares many electronic components with the small DSLR APS-C cameras, and this explains the low cost/price. It is a great camera, no doubt. This is the type of product Leica should have developed, instead of the "pro" S2. I think MF "pros" are changing and adapting. I may be wrong though. rosuna Posted March 10, 2010 Share #14 Posted March 10, 2010 (edited) The Pentax 645D doesn't have a professional support and distribution system, but Leica has a price for those services, and I guess Pentax will develop an improved system as well, based on their (mostly weak) system for the small DSLRs of the brand. The first units will be distributed only in Japan though. The S2 camera is a great design, but I am not so confident about the business model (high priced, pro oriented, services and assistance, etc.). The Pentax 645D will affect not only Leica S2's sales and market position, but also those of Hasselblad and Mamiya/Phase One/Leaf. I think it will impact more strongly on Hasselblad and the Phase One conglomerate because those companies have "more affordable" models, and Leica is playing only in the "top class" segment. The Pentax camera is a small revolution for the segment of the market that includes top pro 24x36mm cameras and low priced 33x44mm or so cameras. eleskin Posted March 10, 2010 Share #18 Posted March 10, 2010 Now that it is here, this new Pentax 645D is a seriously tempting camera, especially when you consider it will be priced to compete with the top of the line Nikon and Canon offerings. It also will cause some pros to ask if it makes business sense to sink over $20k into what Leica, Mamiya, Hasselblad, Phase One, etc,,, are selling. This new Pentax looks lika a real winner and it does make really good business sense, especially in today's hard economic times! Let's see if the other manufacturers will step up to the plate. I have a Pentax 645n and can tell you this camera never failed me as a pro, and the lenses were first rate. I am considering this new camera seriously. This will give Nikon, Canon , etc, reason to loose some sleep! Pentax should be congradulated here for making medium format digital accessable to more photographers at less cost, a very important economic principle in thes hard economic times. I hope Pentax runs all they way to the bank ($$$&) with this camera. They deserve it. Nice to see Nikon and Canon sweat a little. As for the S2. A great camera, but prices way out of my reach. If the suggested price is correct that would give a pro looking for an MFD camera some serious thinking to do. Two Pentax bodies and a whole raft of lenses or one S2 and a single lens. In the end IQ will be the thing. In recent back to back tests, there was nothing to choose between an S2 and a Phase 45. I suspect the Pentax may be equally good. Too many manufacturers going after a very small market - I wonder? Now we have Phase, Leica, Mamiya, Pentax, maybe Leaf plus all the specialists like Alpa, Horseman, Seitz, Gilde, Cambo, Sinar and Linhof. Probably a good idea to restrict it at first to Japan, there will probably be teething problems which would be difficult for Pentax to handle if sold globally. Maybe the first real indication of a future serious softening in MFD pricing. I wonder if Canon, Nikon and Sony have anything in the pipeline?
